Sidney Dewey Sitzler, 90, of Kingston, passed away Monday, April 22, 2013, in The Bridge at Rockwood, surrounded by his family.
He was born on April 4, 1923, in Laurel Bluff and was a lifelong resident of Roane County. He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he had taught Sunday school for more than 25 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served his country proudly during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart Medal during his service. He enjoyed farming and was an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by parents, James Alfred and Mamie Miles Sitzler; and eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors include loving wife of 69 years, Violet Ethelle Renfro Sitzler, Kingston; children, Patricia "Patty" Sampson and husband J.D., Midtown, Sandra Owings and husband Harold, Kingston, Ronnie Sitzler and wife, Tonya, Kingston, and Sherry Fowler and husband Mark, Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Donna Begley, Jay Sampson, Dewey Sampson, Kristi Harrison, Chad Owings, Amanda Boyd, Megan Fowler, Libby Fowler and Graham Fowler; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Wayne Sitzler and wife Barbara Dyell, Bradenton, Fla.; sister-in-law, Shirley Sitzler, Kingston; a host of extended family and friends.
The family received friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in Fraker Funeral Home, Kingston, with funeral service following at 4 p.m. in the chapel, with the Rev. Ray Bearden and Bro. Greg Maggard officiating. A private graveside service followed the funeral at Calvary/Hazelwood Cemetery with full military honors being conducted at gravesite by the Roane County Honor Guard.
