J. Philip Ward, of Roanoke, passed away March 10, 2013, of natural causes. He was born January 19, 1933, in Sumter, S.C. where, he liked to tell us, he had to walk miles to school in deep, deep snow. His parents were T. Moody and LaRue Ward. He joined the Navy when young and while stationed on the Great Lakes got to experience some real deep snow and brr-rabbits! cold. He made his career as a printer and retired from The Roanoke Times.
Philip met Patsy Bryant in the Atlantic Ocean near the Chesapeake Bay and they married in 1952. They had four children.
Besides his family, Dad loved frogs, dogs, birds, Chet Atkins, Andres Segovia, Mark Twain, Oreos, and chocolate.
He is survived by wife, Patsy; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Sheila and Gary and Susan; daughters and sons-in-law, Amy and Chris and Patricia and Okey; grandchildren, Joseph, Paige, Cheyanna, Lee, and Brandi; great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Breanna, Kaylee, Aaron, Gavin, and Maddy; brother, T.M., and sister, Mary Dell.
He is loved deeply and will be strongly missed by so many.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bedford D-Day War Memorial.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Pastor Jay Dove officiating.
