Leonard Gilliam Spurlock, 93, of Salem, passed away peacefully at the Virginia Veterans Care Center on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, surrounded by family and friends. Leonard Spurlock was born October 15, 1919, one of sixteen children born to the late Thomas and Willie Ann Spurlock, of Salem. He was educated in the Roanoke County School System and later served in the United States Army
from 1942 to 1945. Leonard retired from General Electric Company as a wireman after 23 years of dedicated service. Leonard was married to the late Laura Waldron Spurlock for 51 happy years. He served as Trustee Emeritus of Shiloh Baptist Church, BOD of Community Housing Corporation and a member of the Salem Masonic Lodge #120 for over 50 years where he obtained the degree of Past Master.
He is survived by one brother, Kelly M. Spurlock, of Willimantic, Conn.; three sisters, Betty Shearin, of Columbia, S.C., Lois S. Hopson, of Roanoke, and Grace S. Hopson, of Storrs, Conn.; a devoted sister-in-law, Margaret Spurlock, of Salem; numerous cousins; nieces; and nephews; and a devoted caregiver, Dorothy Oneal.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Salem at 1 p.m. with visitation for family and friends at noon. The Reverend Adrian Dowell will officiate and interment will follow at Williams Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Shiloh Baptist Church for the Laura W.
