Mary Imogene Burton Coiner, 94, of Lynchburg, died on Thursday, March 14, 2013. Gene was born in Charlottesville on January 9, 1919, and grew up in Waynesboro. She and her husband were married in 1945, and lived in several states, making lifelong friends wherever they went. They retired to Blacksburg, where they were supporters of the Virginia Tech Hokies and enjoyed traveling, reading, and being with family and friends. They were members of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg. Gene has lived in Lynchburg since 2004, when her husband died. Gene loved to paint and draw, sew, and garden. Her home was always decorated with her watercolor paintings, her needlepoint pillows, and fresh flowers in season. She also loved birds and all other animals. Gene had a great sense of humor and was a wonderful storyteller.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robson Coiner Sr.; her parents, James Burton and Rachel Glenn Burton; her sister, Nancy Burton Herson; and her two brothers, James Burton and John Burton.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John R. Coiner Jr. and Janet Thomas Coiner, of Lynchburg; her grandson, Rob Coiner III, of Raleigh, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the people at Bentley Commons and Seven Hills Hospice, as well as Gene's helpers (Rachel, Reeba, and Rhonda), for their loving care.
There will be no visitation. The interment will be private and held at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Crimora.
