Richard Stephen Mater, 53, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday August 11, 2013 at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was born February 23, 1960 in Staunton, Va. After graduation in 1978 from Stuarts Draft High School, he continued his education at Radford University. Rick was an accomplished I.T. professional with expertise in voice over I.P., telecommunications, and associated software development. He received numerous awards during his career with U.S. West, Nortel and Advance Auto. He was highly dedicated in his work and was always willing to share his knowledge with fellow employees with a goal to increase his own knowledge during his career. He was a recipient of the second quarter "Drive Our Promise " award at Advance, being recognized by fellow employees and the CEO of Advance Auto Company. He was always willing to help others and was very supportive of his family and friends, as he made his journey through life.
The world is a better place because of his life and the High values he stood for. He was an avid sports fan especially enjoying NASCAR racing. Rick brought many family and friends together through his warm and vibrant personality, humor and quick wit.
He is survived by his father, Irvin Mater; mother, Lucille B. Mater; and brother, Cmdr. David A. Mater, US Navy.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes all memorial contributions be made to the Rescue Mission of Roanoke, 402 4th St. SE, Roanoke or the Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd St. New York, NY 10016.
