Glen LaPrade Obituary

Glen Samuel (Buz) LaPrade Jr., of Salem, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, after a long struggle with cancer. He was the son of the late Glen and Mary Etta LaPrade. He was the grandson of the late Sam and Bell LaPrade and Joe and Mary Angell, all of Boones Mill. Glen was born on November 14, 1939. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He then went to work for Kroger and retired after 30 years of service. This allowed him to own and operate Fort Lewis Auto Sales and Lakeside Auto Sales. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 3, in Salem. Surviving is my dear, sweet wife, Debbie Long, my friend, companion, lover and soulmate; my special pets, "P.D" and "Tirbo;" son, Todd LaPrade, of Roanoke; father and mother-in-law, B.J. and Violet Long; sister-in-law, JoAnn LaPrade, of Roanoke; sisters-in-law and husbands, Tammie and Jim Kroll, and Valerie and Rick Mitchell, all of Abingdon; and many nieces and nephews. I would like to thank all of the Kroger truck drivers for their loving assistance during the time of my illness. Special thanks to the Robertson family, the Altice family, the Mills family, the Clement family and all of the other drivers that stopped by to help. Special thanks to Cliff and Sandy Whitley, to my aunt and the entire Elsie Poe family of Laura Springs, N.C. Most of all I want to thank Dorothy Vass who has become more than a sister to me. She has visited me every single day since I became ill on October 22, 2010. She, her husband, and her entire family, have included me and my wife, Deb, in everything they do. They have loved us as no other. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011, at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Junior Westmoreland officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 21, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Faith Baptist Church Ladies Fellowship, 900 8th Street, Salem, VA 24153. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.lotzfuneralhome.com.

Debbie and family...our family sends our love to you and yours. I remember he use to call me his "little buddy". I also remember him telling me that when I drove by your house all he could see was the top of my hands on the steering wheel. Over three years ago I gave you a card with a man who looked so much like Glen, hanging by his arms and legs on a big oak tree. That's how I picture him in heaven. I can hear him laughing that big laugh of his and I know that soon we will all see that big grin again. He'll be one of the faces I look for. May God give you comfort at this time of loss and know you have friends who will do anything they can to help.
