Dianna Pickering Obituary

Dianna Lee Singleton Pickering, 67, of Radford, Va. and formerly of Emmaus, Pa. and South Bend, Ind., died on Sunday, September 5, 2010 at her home surrounded by family. She was born September 8, 1942 in Danville, Ill., to the late Arthur J. Singleton and Maryel "Pat" (Patrick) Singleton. She married her high school sweetheart Timothy Lee Pickering in Joliet, Ill. on September 3, 1960. She is survived by her husband; children, Elizabeth Anne Pickering of Fleetwood, Pa., Christopher Lee Pickering of Roanoke, Shannon Kathleen Pickering Rigsbee of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Marielle Esther Pickering and Leah Christine Pickering of Edgewater, Md.; and brother, Steve Singleton of Ann Arbor, Mich. Dianna's education and training in music led to a long career of arts administration, in addition to work with a variety of social service organizations. Highlights of her career include director of culture and tourism for Downtown Allentown, executive director of Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra, and managing agent for chamber music group Animé, a women's trio of flute, violin, and cello. She also served as board member and staff for DiscoveryWorks children's museum in Radford, and as director and/or leader on the boards of several non-profit organizations including Blacksburg Master Chorale, NRV Hospice, Free Clinic of the NRV, and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Dianna sang for many decades with various choral groups including the Blacksburg Master Chorale and Master Singers, and enjoyed producing their Robert Shaw concert in 1998.
Dianna earned her Master Gardener certificate in 1992, and for the past 20 years created beautiful landscapes from her own backyard of rock, clay, and shale, as well as at the Smithfield Plantation gardens, which she managed for a while. She enjoyed and excelled at a wide variety of creative pursuits including furniture refinishing, cooking, and pressed and dried flower prints. Dianna especially enjoyed traveling with her husband. Their favorite trips were a Greek Odyssey through Greece and Turkey, a French tour of Paris and Provence, and exploring Italy, especially Venice.
The family thanks the community for its loving support during Dianna's very difficult illness. There are so many to count and to name, we don't want to forget anyone. Friends are invited to support and visit with Dianna's family on Thursday, September 9, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 County Club Drive, Blacksburg, Va. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a contribution to the Dianna Pickering Memorial Garden Fund, care of the Community Foundation of the NRV, P.O. Box 6009, Christiansburg, Va., 24068, which will be used to support establishment of native plantings at Smithfield Plantation. A celebration of Dianna's life and service to the community will be held on April 10, 2011 at the Smithfield Plantation Pavilion, at a time to be announced. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

Hi, I just got Tim's email about Dianna's Open House and this was the first I have heard of her passing. I didn't see her much but when I did, I always thought that she is one of those people who brighten your day! She was beautiful and seemed to always be happy and have a smile on her face. I am sad that she has passed and send thoughts and prayers to her family and friends. Stephanie Huckestein (Blacksburg, VA)

Hello,
My name is Sonya Chappelear and I owned the Cheshire Gallery here in Roanoke. I was going through and updating my mailing list and wanted to send Dianna an invitation to an upcoming show at the Patton-Phillips gallery that I'm helping out with and was shocked and sad to come across this information. My deepest regards. She last visited the gallery in November 2008 and purchased a beautiful bi-metal necklace made by Elizabeth Garvin. As I recall she was a lovely lady both inwardly and in her appearance. May God's blessings be with you.

Sincerely,
Sonya Chappelear

Dear Tim,
Today I learned of Dianna's passing. I am so sad to hear this news. I knew Dianna during The Plant Plant days. She added such a dimension of energy and enthusiasm to our nursery, and to all the people who visited and got a chance to chat with her. She always volunteered her precious time with whole-hearted gusto in anything that was asked of her, from transplanting herbs to weeding perennial flowers on the hottest of days.

Dianna was always so cheerful, and so darn funny -- she would put all of us in stitches with laughter no matter how tired we were with our gardening tasks. Dianna was also a person who would really listen to you ... who would feel your pain and exalt in your happiness. She was everything a good friend could possibly be. She was also a good and beautiful woman. For those of us fortunate enough to have known Dianna, even for a little while, we know that we were truly blessed to have shared a portion of time with this truly remarkable, loving lady.

A toast to you, Dianna --- you will always be missed!
And love to you, Tim, and to your family ...

Words cannot express the sadness we have in our hearts upon hearing of Dianne's passing. One may find these words from virtual strangers a bit personal, but we who share the diagnosis of Esophageal Cancer have a unique relationship with one another. Our hearts beat as one the instant we learn of another soul diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer. We at the American Cancer Society's "Cancer Survivors' Network" (CSN) bond together to lend spiritual, moral and medical support to one another on the Esophageal Cancer Discussion Link. Each one has a unique experience, but banded together, are able to help newcomers find the best doctors and best medical practices available. We share both our disappointments and our successes. Had not Dianna encountered pre-operative complications, she would have been able to have the very latest laparoscopic procedure known as a Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy. This procedure affords the least invasion of the body cavity with the quickest pain-free recovery. We were so praying that she could rebound and overcome her other illnesses and gain strength to undergo this procedure. Sad to say, that was not to be.

While a sojourner here on Planet Earth, Dianna made the most of all her God-given talents. She brought joy to many, and was her happiest when serving others. Her love for music and the talent she possessed has now reached perfection. If you thought she sang beautifully down here, wait till you get to Heaven. She's now joined the chorus of heavenly angels who delight in singing God's praises. No one in her group will ever hit a sour note. And in God's garden, flowers forever bloom. There are no thorns on God's roses. There is just one harmonious family of believers joining in song with the angelic choir, in a land free from all sickness, pain and sorrow.

No doubt by now Dianna has spent days reminiscing with former friends and family members who were waiting for her at Heaven's gate. We look forward to meeting Dianna on yonder shore where she now dwells in a land that is fairer than day. A home where God promises to wipe every tear from our eyes. Till then, Tim, may God carry you and your family in His arms through this trying time of life, and give you His peace.

Sincere sympathy ~ William Marshall & Loretta Marshall, on behalf of all the Esophageal Cancer Family on the American Cancer Survivor's Network.

Dianna took the Master Gardener Training class and I believe served as a NRV Master Gardener Association Board member during the 1990's. She was thrilled with all the plants planted around her new home on Waltons' Mt. She cherished each leaf and tried so hard to keep them from those deer. Dianna was a wonderful lady, I shall miss seeing her around the New River Valley. Peace be with each of you!
