He was born on May 17, 1927, in the town of Beelick Knob, W.Va., to the late William Edgar and Effie Moody Coffman. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Robert (Rusty) Coffman Jr., who passed away on August 31, 2002; a brother, Charles Coffman; and two sisters, Blanche Gwynn Judy and Louise Harris.
On December 16, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty J. Cheatwood in Pearisburg, Va. In 1966, Robert and Betty moved to Rich Creek, Va. After 36 years of service, Robert retired from Appalachian Power Company. One of Robert's greatest loves was operating a bulldozer. He worked with his best friend, J.B. Buckland, clearing properties throughout Rich Creek and Giles County. In 2009, Robert and Betty retired to Roanoke, Va., residing at Pheasant Ridge Retirement Village.
Robert was a member of Glen Lyn Church of Christ. Since moving to Roanoke, he attended Penn Forest Christian Church. He was a member of the Kazim Temple and the Giles County Kazim Misfits.
Robert is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter-in-law, Brenda; grand-dog, Princess; two grandchildren, Jamie Elliott, of Roanoke, and Cindy Pagans, of Boones Mill; five greatgrandchildren, Benjamin and Timothy Gillis, Treavor and Cody Ray Pagans, and Jacob Elliott; his twin sister, Roberta Mae Walters, of Dennison, Ohio; several nieces, nephews and other relatives; and many special friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2010, at Glen Lyn Church of Christ in Glen Lyn, Va., with Danny Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in Elgood Cemetery at Elgood, W.Va. Dearest Aunt Betty,

I am so sorry for the loss of Uncle Jimmy. He was one of the finest gentlemen I ever had met in life. I am so glad you both had each other. You also one of greatest people I ever met. Good Christian people!
I know he took everything in his body to make this last trip to Ohio. He has been a blessing to all of us!
Lots of Love!
