Irene Poindexter Obituary

Mrs. Irene Saunders Poindexter, 78, of Rocky Mount, Va., peacefully departed this life on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at her home of 38 years. Irene was born on April 21, 1932, in Wadesboro, Va., to the late Aaron Saunders and Nannie Gibson Saunders. She leaves to cherish and mourn her loss eight children; three daughters, Sandra (Larry) Smith, of Rocky Mount, Va., Bonita Poindexter, of Glade Hill, Va., and Pamela (Elvis) Witcher, of Snow Creek, Va.; five sons, Charles Wayne Poindexter, of Bowie, Md., Larry (Sally) Poindexter, of Roanoke, Va., Kenneth (Talecia) Poindexter, of Alexandria, Va., John Poindexter, of the home, and Mark (Kimberly) Poindexter, of Charlotte, N.C. She was loved and supported by special friends of the family, Larry Woodard, of Bowie, Md., Wanda Poindexter, of Glade Hill, Va., and Sandy Giles, of Rocky Mount, Va. Irene was the grandmother of 18 grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Grant Poindexter; and her eldest daughter, Joyce Helms. As one of 12 siblings, Irene is survived by four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Alice Adkins, of Rocky Mount, Va., Virginia (Elbert) Edwards, of Union Hall, Va., Ruth McDaniel, of Wadesboro, Va., and Shirley (James) Jackson, of Salem, Va.; and sisters-in-law, Clearsey Saunders, of Rocky Mount, Va., and Lera Saunders, of Alexandria, Va. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 7, 2010, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pigg River Community Center. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Faith Fellowship Church, Wirtz, Va. Funeral arrangements by Stanfield Mortuary Service, Rocky Mount, Va., 540-483-2902.
