I just got word this evening of Brian's passing. On behalf of Suburban Whitetail Management of Northern Virginia, I wish to convey my sincerest condolences to the Cauley family. This truly is a shocking tragedy. Brian was a member of SWMNV while he was in Northern Virginia and volunteered his assistance in arranging - what turned out to be - our last annual golf tournament to raise funds for the organization's expenses.
Brian also had one heck of a drive and could send the ball screaming for a solid 200+ yards. I, on the other hand, stunk. Brian helped me with my swing, and then, insisted on giving me his old driver for that final golf tournament we played; I still have it today. I still stink at golf, but I can drive! Thank you, Brian; I will tape your name to the shaft of that club and covet it more than ever.
Brian was also an avid bowhunter, and a good one at that. We were sorry to see him move to Roanoke, but happy for him and his family nonetheless.....we all know, there's NO place like home.
Still, we hoped we'd cross paths again one day, perhaps with bows & arrows, but alas, it seems the Lord had plans for Brian, and as I've said from time to time, we are neither privy to HIS plan, or in a position to argue.
God bless you, Brian. Rest in peace, brother, and we'll see you in turn.
To the Cauley family: I believe we have a few pictures of Brian...some from that tournament, a few with his son (Mark Gauntner took). We'll try to round up what we have and pass them to you.
May the Lord hold you close in this trying time.
With profound sadness and sincerity,
Ralph Huppert II

As a child I was privileged to live 2 houses up from the Cauley family & my best friend was Brian. A year older than me I remember him showing me how to get on the bus for the first day of school.I rember playing wiffle ball in his back yard & traget practice with our bows there also. As we got older we would go fishing anywhere there was water & the day we wadded tinker creek and I cought the biggest trout of my life. As life went on we each went on our own paths & became our on men but never the less anytime we saw each other it was just like when we were kids again , proving that a true friendship is always evolving over time. What I rember the most about Brian is that no matter how bad or wrong something was all he had to do was show you that big smile and you knew that it would be ok . I like so many others have been blessed in this life to have had a friend like brian & in rembering the person he was will allow me to always have a friend. To Tanyon I hope one oneday you to will also have a friend that means as much to you as your fathers friendship means to me.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
