Shirley Quinn Obituary

Shirley Mae Blankenship Quinn, of Roanoke, Va., went home to the Lord on Sunday, June 13, 2010. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert H. Quinn Jr.; her parents, Carroll and Ruth Young; and faithful dog, Elmo. She is survived by two children, Ginger Quinn, of Boones Mill, and Wayne Quinn and wife, Lisa; three grandchildren, Brandon, Cody and Cheyenne; one brother, James Welch, all of Roanoke; along with her great neighbors, Barbara, Steve, Cindi and Dwayne; friend, Janet Saunders; and many more special friends.
Her life was spent serving her family and her extended families at Ronald McDonald House in Roanoke. For 20 years she nurtured "The House that love built" and truly loved her job thanks to the friendships she built with co-workers, the volunteers and guests at her beloved "House." She was dedicated to the families she served and took pride in ensuring that the "House" and guest rooms were spotless. As her work day ended she tied her apron on and got down to serious business in "Shirley's Kitchen" preparing a fabulous meal supported by volunteers and staff for approximately 30 guests each weeknight. Satisfaction came at the end of the day when she took her seat at the dinner table with her extended family.
She loved to travel and visit other Ronald McDonald Houses throughout the United States. She retired in 2006 from her much-loved Ronald McDonald House but continued to serve her paper customers at The Roanoke Times until January of 2010. In retirement she attended the noon water aerobics class at LancerLot and was blessed with many new friends and looked forward to going out with the volunteers at the "House."
In lieu of flowers, please honor her life with a donation to her beloved Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Laney Mofield and Pastor Mike Shaffer officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 540-982-2221.

Wayne, Ginger & Family,
Shirley was such a special person and a fun neighbor to hang out with. She was always avaiable for me to vent my frustrations as well as share good times with and of course I'm gonna miss those calls "Steve, will you come over here and fix this" LOL.. I loved her as you know and can't wait to see her in Heaven someday. She loved her family so much and I'm sure you are very proud of that, Thoughts & Prayers are with you all from me, Barb, my Mom & everyone!!

Ginger & Wayne,
So sorry to hear of your mothers passing. Mom called me last night and told me. We will not be able to make it to the funeral but please know our hearts are with you during this time. I can't apoligize enough in finding out so late and not being able to be there for you all. Shirley was a true good friend of mom's and the families. This was an era in our lives that will never be forgotten. I hope the Lord will find a way to bring you all peace. May God bless you all. Love you all so much!!!

Dear family, Shirley was such a sweet lady. We did aerobics at Lancerlot and teased each other about all the Shirley's in class. Her pleasant smile will remain in my thoughts for ever so long. She so loved her family and you were good to her in return.
