Donald Ray McCune, 75, of Salem, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, March 13, 2013. He was born in Roanoke, a son of the late Fredrick Marshall McCune and Bessie Virginia Fout McCune. Ray proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1955 thru 1959, retired from Lionberger Construction Company where he served as a senior vice president, and was a member of the Salem Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wesley and Sydney McCune, and by his aunt and uncle, Glenna and Jesse Fout.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Judy Hawley McCune; a son, Barry McCune and his wife Crystal; daughter Bonnie Crotts and her husband, Bugsy; five grandchildren, Jamie Crotts and his wife, Melissa, Kristen Morris and her husband, Nick, Karl Crotts and his wife Sara, Courtney McCune and Bryan Parker; four great-grandchildren and one on the way, Skylar, Hailey, Camden, Azura, and Baby Morris; a sister, Virginia Yates; a brother, James McCune, and his loving dog, Bridgette.
He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, granddaddy and great-granddaddy.
A funeral service to celebrate Ray's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. The Rev. Everett Kier will officiate. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
