Hay, you remember that time we was in a lesson and you called Yngwie Malmsteen Wingnut and you told me about how they'd put that on his door cause no one knew how to spell his name? Well, Apple still don't know how to spell his name and it's like 30 years later! lol I literally had to look it up to make this post. Any how I thought of that just now and I'm laughing and the way you'd have to try and slow that down for me to try and teach me those ridiculous killer arpeggios! Man life was all about the guitar for me back then and now I just found out I'm going to be a grandfather! Can you believe that!! I was just tuning in the Marshal this morning and thinking how that warm tone sounded sooo good. If you could only hear my set up and what pointers you'd give to get more out of it. You were an ever endless wealth of knowledge man. I sometimes think about finding another guitar teacher, but I just can't. It's crazy huh. I bet you thought I was just some kid that never would remember you, but you were the first REAL rockstar I ever met! Getting to see you on stage as a 15 yo kid was no different than when I last saw you at the Leitersburg cinemas playing Pantera and tearing it up, but dude, I remembered a lot from those lessons. Thanks for everything man, especially believing in me!

Well buddy, I got the honor of the 100th post. I also finally sat down and learned a few scales and man you was right, the whole world of music opened up to me and it´s all starting to make since!! It´s crazy how hard you pushed and punched and kicked me during our lessons all those years to get me to learn em´. You truly are the best teacher I ever had! That too was quite an honor! But I think the greatest honor of all was you being my friend. You simply believed in me. Well, I couldn´t let that go to waste, so there you go, you won this one! Now how´s those modes go??

July 15, 2021

Alan it's been 11 years and you still speak to me in my dreams. I will see you in another lifetime. ❤
I'll love you always, Candy

It´s been so long....so long ago and every day I think, how would Allen had played that? I sift through you written notation or tab and I still learn from you. Thank you for taking this 16yo to the studio to video you guys while you were in Dead Lester. When I went to buy a piano I realized why this one PICKED ME out! Thanks for a lifelong love of music!

Al could play the piana like no other. I said Al, since you got that instrument down, here are some cd's. I gave him Champion Jack Dupree, Pinetop Perkins and Memphis Slim. After 2 hours, he ran to my house and said I changed his life. Well Maybe, but he entertained thousands of people with his Boogie Woogie. He could play like no other.

You were born to Rock, You'll never be an Opera star. You never missed a Moonlite night. It was Cloudy, and the Moon was eclised. we couldn't see it. We clogged danced for 45 minutes, then the sky opened up, We witnessed the eclipse. Two peas in a pod.

Hello Old Friend. Al finished his lessons. It was snowing nice. Long hair flowing. He sat down, hair flowing. He was practicing his Ethereal Gifts. I warned him before hand about the slippery steps. I flung a snowball to the window. he up and looked. Slung another. He busted out the side door. Said hey, and slipped down the slippery steps. on his back. He got up, ran around the house, twice to be sure his back wasn't broke. We laughed and had a beer. Al, I said, I warned you about the steps, Haaaa!

Yea, This Guy. Mal

I arranged a jam session with me, Al and Carl Disque. I told Carl that in all my years focusing on guitar players that I have never heard anyone besides Jimmy Page, play like him. He was ours. We grabbed Arnie Helmick and Bart Lay. Back in the mid 90's. 2Blue Ensemble brought the Blues back to Hagerstown. And Tom King, couldn't believe we got Mal. Everyone wanted this Musical Genious and we got him.

I heard he was the Mother of Guitarists, so I knocked on his door with my Acoustic. Want to jam I asked? Sure he said, He started off Graciously. Then He unleashed these notes into my Rhythem andI couldn't believe my Ears, my eyes neither. Let the friendship begin.

My Pal.

January 27, 2012

I got a knock on the door and Al asked me if I had a Dolly/ Surely, I said I have a big one. What are you moving? A Piana. A Piana I said, Man this dolly won't work. So Al and I lugged his most treasured piana into the house, while Mac gave directions. Priceless.

January 27, 2012

I first noticed Al moving in next door. Well, look at this, a Dang long hair. I played "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" on my Gibson SG while I witnessed the move. I hollered "Hi Neighbor!" He hollard back. The Grin told me that me and this guy was gonna become Friends. For Fifteen years.

I didn't know until a month after, and it still saddens me that you're gone. I really wish I would have taken more advantage of the time I had with you teaching me. You brought me out of my shell and taught me how to play out loud instead of quietly to myself. You helped me mature as a person. Thanks for teaching me how to truly love music. I miss you.

I listened to Ethereal Gifts for the first time tonight. Once again I was blown away by your music. I was left with a feeling of sadness that I will never again experience your quick smile, easy laugh, and genuine love for the people around you. But, I was also left with a feeling of gratitude that through your music, so much of you will always be with us. I miss you, cousin!

Something told me to search for you just now, only to find the sad, sad news. My last memory of you was from Shenandoah where we were Piano Performance classmates and we jointly decided to take a walk down to the Piano Tech department and inquire about tuning pianos. We had a blast for the next 2 years. We also had a band for a bit where your technical prowess on guitar was quite evident as I accompanied you on the drums. Unfortunately we lost touch after school (1981) I am so saddened to realize we will never speak or jam again. I truly miss your smiling face and your constant jokes. I will always remember the great times we had. Rest in peace my friend.

I just found out that he passed away. I had no idea.

Alan Mason was my piano teacher from the time I graduated from high school in '08 until early this winter. He was a great person. Very loving and caring. And of course, he was an exceptional musician. For just about every piano lesson I had, we would jam together during our free time; him on the guitar and myself on the piano. I will always remember those moments. I've never met any other musician who could improvise the way he could with me. We just clicked when it came to playing together. And we became great friends.

I've had the honor to take lessons with him, and also had the honor of having him write a wonderful letter of recommendation for me to go to college. I won't forget it.

Nor will I forget you, Alan.

RIP

Al was a dear friend of mine that I miss very much. He was the kind of friend that you could see now and again and always feel like you were the very best of friends that just spoke the day before. Time never seemed to matter when he was here but now that he is gone I realize that I won't have the same opportunity to talk to him again. Maybe someday we will be able to catch up once I get my wings...

Alan will always be remembered by me as a sweet, gentle, patient man who was willing to become part of a fun-loving family upon marrying my sweet, dear niece, Cindy. We were so proud to have a very talented musician added to our family and that we could call our own. I wish we had been able to enjoy his company and music more often. As a music lover, he spoke to my soul and I will truly miss him. May he always be the rainbow in the lives of the many he touched.

Those we love left us with gifts in the form of memories that no one can take away. They gave us wisdom that we can still recall, companionship when we were alone, comfort when we needed it, and memories of their laughter and smile. These are gifts of love that are ours to keep. May the tender mercy that God has always shown be with your family now so that you will know that you are not alone. And may the prayers of others help in some small way to bring you strength, comfort and courage each day. Many words will be expressed, yet we know God can express and provide to you and your family everything that is needed to care and sustain your hearts at this sad time. - Isaiah 41:10 & 13.

I first met Alan in high school. I gave him a ride home from school one day and he had his fiddle from band with him. I was playing an old 8-track tape of David Bromberg and Alan liked it. He got out his fiddle, and in short order- had a tune figured out and was working that bow arm coming up the road. Amazing.

That was my first experience of his gift, and I was in awe of his talent-not to mention he was so humble about it. He told me recently that his musical ability was from God.

I am sad Al has left us, but thankful to have known him. My prayers are with Mr. and Mrs. Mason and all who are hurting right now.

Thanks Al for giving your gift away, and a life well lived. Rest in peace old freind, and I will see you on the other side.
