George M. (Jack) Parker Jr., of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., was born on June 30, 1918, the son of the late George M. Parker Sr. and Lilia Boone Parker. He died at 1 a.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2012, at Boone Memorial Hospital in Boone County, W.Va. Near the end he was talking of seeing Jesus and seeing the Light. His wife of 57 years, Dorothy "Dot." Campbell Parker preceded him, dying on December 13, 2006. He and she raised six sons in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. Their youngest son, Neil Campbell Parker preceded them in death, passing on August 9, 2003. Left to remember a life very well lived are sons and daughters-in-law, Dan (Barbara) of Foster, W.Va., Glenn (Pam) of Princeton, W.Va., Bennie (Vivian) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Keith of Stanardsville, Va., and George M. "GP" (Debbie) of White Sulphur Springs. He also leaves his grandchildren, Dr. Steven (Dr. Arminda) Parker, Amanda Parker (Mike) DeFede, Christopher Parker and fiancée, Jessicia Kines, Sarah Parker (Brian) Akers, Matthew Parker, Holly Parker (Wayne) Nuckolls, Bennie Lee (Jaimie) Parker Jr., Lea Anne Parker Bard, Miles Parker, Aiden Parker, Neil Parker, and Claire Parker. He also leaves behind his great- grandchildren, Alina Parker, Alexander Parker, Mariella DeFede, Christiana DeFede, Liliana DeFede, Ashley Akers, Kayleigh Akers, Savanna Akers, Regan Akres, Brayden Nuckolls, Braxton Nuckolls, Ryleigh Parker, Ava Parker, Gabrial Bard, Makayla Bard, and Nathanial Bard. He is also survived by his sister, Juanita (Dick) Donovan, of Organ Cave, W.Va.; his brothers and sister-in-law, John (Viola) Campbell, Jean (Jerry) Frazier, and Albert Campbell, all of Roanoke, Va.; plus a host of nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death other than his wife, parents, and youngest son, is his brother, Benny (Louise) Parker, Margaret Parker (Benny) Brown, Virginia Parker (Joe) VanStavern, Helen Parker, and Mary Frances Campbell (Charley) Kidd. He graduated from Greenbrier High School in 1937 and Roanoke Business College in 1939. He and millions more were swept by the winds of war to serve in World War II. He soldiered under General Mark Clark in North Africa and Italy. After the war he began working for Bowling Hardware and Furniture Company in White Sulphur Springs. He became part owner and worked there for 60 years, retiring in 2005 at the age of 87. He was a member of the White Sulphur Springs Emmanuel United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendant among other offices. He served with many civic organization and governmental bodies including the White Sulphur Springs Fire Department as Secretary, Treasurer, and Lieutenant, and was a member of the Masons. He and other World War II veterans formed the Sugar Camp Hunt Club which he fondly spoke of during his last days. Services will be held at The White Sulphur Springs Emmanuel United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2012, with the Rev. Ken Peters officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs. Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., (304) 536-1313, is serving the family.
