Howard Smith Obituary

Howard Ernest Smith, 86, of Roanoke, Va., died Saturday, April 17, 2010. He was born November 2, 1923, in Swissvale, Pa., a son of the late Dr. Earl F. Smith and Nina Eberhart Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sue McChesney Smith; two brothers; and two sisters. Mr. Smith served as a finance officer in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from Burlington Industries. He was a member of Green Ridge Presbyterian Church and a founding member of the Historical Society of Hillsville, Va. Surviving are his son, Douglas M. Smith and wife, Tammy, of Woodlawn; daughter, Evelyn Smith Jordan, of Salem; grandchildren, Jessica A. Jordan, Phillip D. Smith, Matthew S. Jordan, Patrick H. Smith, and Jennifer L. Jordan; great-grandchild, Sierra N. Jordan; nieces, Cheryl and Rebecca Longdon, and Erla Palmer; sister-in-law, Kathleen McChesney; and special friends, Susan Hunley, Sylvia Soriano, Alice Zickers, Marie Tinsley, and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mozingo. The family offers a special thanks to Home-based Primary Care at the VA Medical Center for their many acts of kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Green Ridge Presbyterian Church, 7640 Alpine Road, Roanoke, Va. 24019 or to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, #106, Roanoke, Va. 24018. A memorial service will be conducted 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Green Ridge Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Pattie Sewell. Interment will be in Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. My grandpa was an amazing man. He and my grandma will never be forgotton. I will always be a grandpas girl. I miss you grandpa. The day you died a piece of sunshine of mine died with you.
