Inga Solonevich Obituary

Inga Solonevich passed away, peacefully in her bed, on February 10, 2012, nine years after her beloved husband George. They were married for 65 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Annie Theodora Nystrom and Arthur Donner, her sisters, Gunnel and Karin, and her brother, Andreas. She is survived by her son, Michael and his partner, Christa Wolfe, of Germany; her daughter, Ulita and "son-in-love", Earl (Skip) Taliaferro, of Roanoke; as well as her granddaughters and their husbands, Decca and Brian Knight, of Roanoke, Cameron Shar and Kris Piemonte, of Baltimore, Md.; and her great-grandson, Sullivan Knight. Her sister, Anita Zilliacus, 101 years of age, and sister-in-law, Mona Donner, live in Finland; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews the world over. Inga was born in Finland in 1915, where she went to the Art Antheneum in Helsinki. There she met George and, by her account, spent the next 65 years never having a dull moment. Her first commission was to paint the 250 birds and 60 mammals of Finland which took over two years to complete. Throughout her life, she produced extraordinary sculptures, paintings and even wrote two books, all being created from a life few have ever known. Inga and George were caught in the grips of World War II in Nazi Germany, then under Peron in Argentina, before they came to New York as refugees with Mike and Ulita on a coffee freighter. Their first home became the Tolstoy Farm, a Russian enclave, outside the city. One of her first commissions in America was to paint the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's treasured pug dogs in the Waldorf Astoria in NYC. Little did she know that it was an honor to paint these dogs and never to expect payment. They came to their beautiful mountain top in Roanoke in 1955, where they could find peace and the inspiration to pursue their life's work.
Inga will be sorely missed by ALL her children. Her love, patience, wisdom and unending humor nurtured us all through good times and bad. Everyone who knew her can carry that spirit with them throughout their lives. Look around .... she's here with us.
Thank you to ALL her dear friends who came so often and shared in her life, as she did in theirs. Thank you Nikki Litwiller and Good Samaritan Hospice for the wonderful care and unending love you gave to us. With your support, Inga had the opportunity to live her life to the end on her beloved mountain.
To end in Inga's words, from her book, The Long Trek to Solola,
"Death is a release of all of my life's stored energy. It can't get lost, whether you call it energy or soul or incarnation, if that sounds better. Since I think it would be fun to get my ashes strewn in my own meadow, I probably would return, not as a Maharaja, but as a butter cup and a few grasses, gracefully bending in sun and wind, which suits me just fine."
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Good Samaritan Hospice. A Celebration of Inga's life will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2012, at The Discovery Center at the entrance to Mill Mountain Zoo.

We all, and I Ingas little brother Andreas son, always remember Inga as a happy and genuinely positive and of all things interested aunt. As a child I always looked forward to meeting her as she visited her siblings and the rest of the big family in Finland.
Inga was always curious in a positive and inspiring way. She was very easily approachable and always received one with open arms.
She was also happy to share her versatile life experience, a life in which so much had happened. Of this we got a small first glimpse in the book The Long Trek to Solola.
Today, we have in our home nearly ten paintings that Inga has painted, they remind us daily of her and her colourful and rich life.

Inga and George were an inspiration to everyone that encountered their lives. I've always been fond of art and heve been inspired by knowing both of them if only so brief. They are missed but not forgotten.

Solola and its people were magical for me when I grew up in Finland as Inga's youngest niece, daughter of her little brother Andreas. Later on I moved to the US and was able to visit and experience the serendipity of the mountain and Inga's never ending optimism and understanding of all things living. She will always remain in our fond memories and hearts, but more so live on in every morsel at Solola.

Inga was a most wonderful, gifted and unique woman. I treasure all the years spent at the dinner table on Solola listening to the stories George and Inga would share. Saturday nite saunas, Inky the blacksnake, her dogs and all the things she loved were on her mountain.I cherish her gifts of art and am forever grateful to have been a small part of her "family". There will never be anyone like her. Ulita, Mischka, Skip, Decca, Shar and families, it was truly my honor to know Inga. I will miss her as will so many, but she lives on in the lives and hearts of you all, her family. God's Peace.

I came to 'Solola' in May, 1995, the year our son, Vidar Zilliacus, was born in Ekenes, Finland. I gave Yuri(or Solola itself) a walking stick made of Minnesota Diamond Willow.
Inga said she was visited by a bear at her door last August to greet her, perhaps to welcome her ashes to the forest. I spoke with her twice this winter, so often visiting her sister, Anita Donner Zilliacus. Inga's voice will always ring in my ear.
These were magical people, artists of the highest standing.

What unbelievable memories of the family we had up at Solola in the mid 80's. Bunker Hill was our home as newlyweds. If anything will make you adjust quickly to marriage it's living in 400 sq ft. But ahhh....we had the great mountain as our backyard. George and Inga made up nicknames for everyone so I have no idea what anyone's real name was. Wonderful, seemingly exotic times. Love. For many years, we enjoyed our visits to Solola.
I would have "shots and plugs" with George, and Margaret Ann and Inga would have "girl talk", as they called it. Then we would all enjoy a quiet time listening to violin music.
This is indeed a Magic Memory.
The Long Trek to Solola", Inga's book, is still beside Margaret Ann's chair, where she enjoyed her best in reading.
Now, she has Inga with her, doing "Girl Talk" again.

Dear Family,
I met Inga and George many years ago when I went to look at one of the cottages they had for rent. I fell in love with the location and the cottages and thoroughly enjoyed a brief visit and chat. From that brief encounter, I have remembered them off and on through the years. It seemed it was a beautiful place with some very delightful people. My condolences to you all.

Dear Skip and Ulita. I just learned of
Inga's passing and am so sad. Down here
in GA, so was just lucky that I found out. You know how much I adored your Mom and Dad and I surely miss walking up the mountain to see them. They were
such an inspiration to me and Larry.
May not be able to get back to VA for
her celebration of life, but I will be
celebrating as we speak.

I am so glad that I had a chance to spend time with you and hear some of your memorable stories. I will pass on the story of Inky on Solonevich, and I promise to help take care of your mountain.....The world lost a true Matriarch.

I am honored to have read and own Inga's books and to have spent a few hours lovely hours with her on her mountain. Her books are beside my bed and instead of reading my granddaughter fairy tales, I will tell her what I call " Inga stories" . I see so many things thru out the day that remind me of your family stories, puppies, parachutes, and now butter cups. Cathy Walker/Radford, Va

Inga told me on the morning of her birthday last week that she'd dreamed all night of being unable to escape a sinking ship. Now she has. I'm sad for the loss of one of the greatest ladies [how she would roar with laughter at being called a 'lady'] I ever knew - but I celebrate her freedom. I am among the countless whose lives were forever changed by Inga, whom I loved & respected deeply. She knew & understood I wouldn't be attending her memorial service when the time came; for she was, & would be, part of me always.

February 13, 2012

Dear Ulita, Skip & Family,
It has many years since I have seen Inga, but she will always remain in my heart and mind as an amazing human being! Her book about Solola is right here on my desk, and I love the inspiration it provides me when life seems "shallow." I remember your wedding and how priviledged my family and I were to be there around such amazing people as Inga and George. Please know that you all are in my heart and prayers.

I never heard anyone say anything about Inga, except how wonderfully amazing and gifted person she was. She dearly touched the life of my older brother Ray, who I think loved her, only second to our own Mother! The Mountain I live on, looks down toward Inga and George's mountain paradise..it represents a place of tranquility, and the abundance of nature at it's very best ....Inga will be missed by everyone, who knew and loved her--- this mountain we call home, has lost a great one.

I grew up below Inga and George's mountain. I was a little girl and knew Ulita. We were the Meadors. I live in Ashland VA. I have 3 daughters and 12 grandchildren. Inga tried to get me to drink goat's milk one time. They were both wonderful people. I know everyone will miss her greatly.

From our front porch directly below in Poages Valley, we see the Light every clear night coming from her house up on the mountain; and we'll always continue to enjoy in our home two signed prints of George's magnificent Buffalo and Lion paintings.

I sometimes dropped in on Inga without notice. It was always a great and informative visit. I remain amazed by her life, her experiences, her insight, her clear political vision.
I once asked her what she thought of Bush 2 right after 9/11. She put her finger in front of her lips going shah and then said, "I have seen all of this before."
RIP wonderful lady. The mountain will be emptier without your warming presence.

A wonderful woman who had more spirit and soul then we were able to know in only one visit.
God bless her and her mountain and may all who visit

I am so sorry for your loss. What talented parents you had!!! My parents, Dick and Dot Angle, spoke of your parents many, many times. They enjoyed their friendship so very much. I remember visiting your parents with Mom and Dad and what an adventure that was! Such talent!!! Dad told your parents story to so many people, and what a story it is! Dad gave me the painting your Dad did...The Yellow Rose. I truly love that painting and the story of the people behind it. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. You had wonderful parents!!!

INGA WAS AN AMAZING LADY ! ONLY INGA COULD ENDURE THE HARDSHIPS AND STRIFE SHE ENDURED IN HER TREK ACROSS THE CONTINENT. SHE AND GEORGE WERE FRIENDS OF ALL THEY KNEW AND I AM PROUD TO HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THAT NUMBER. HER WIT AND WISDOM WAS BEYOND THE GRASP OF MOST OF US. I WILL SAVOR THESE WORDS OF WISDOM AND WIT THAT I GATHERED IN HAVING KNOWN INGA. MAY SHE RECEIVE THE ETERNAL REST PROMISED ALL IN HER FINAL JOURNEY, ONE NOT MARRED WITH FEAR AND TURMOIL. A WONDERFUL LADY HAS LEFT HER EARTHLY HOME, SHE WILL TRULY BE MISSED BY ALL.. WAYNE COOK
