James Carter Obituary

James Monroe Carter, 63, of Salem, Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, Ollen M. Carter; mother, Sylvia L. Carter; brother, Warren D. Carter; grandmother, Dora Draper; uncle, Kenneth Lawhorn; and stepgranddaughter, Amanda L. Eubank. He graduated from William Byrd High School. He served in the United States Army and was in the Vietnam War. He retired from Yokohama Tire with 29 years of service. After he retired he went to work part-time for Berglund Ford as a shuttle driver; he enjoyed it very much and had many friends there. He enjoyed hunting and watching Gold Fever shows. He is survived by wife of 29 years, Shirley L. Carter, who loves him and will miss him. Also surviving are stepchildren, Lora Denny, of Richmond, Charles Stover, of Salem, Jerry (Wanda) Stover, of Roanoke, Peggy (Wesley) Wright, of Roanoke, and Diane (Mike) Tuck, of Roanoke County; stepgrandchildren, who called him Paw-Paw, Jason Denny, Shawn (Buck) Stone, James (Mandy) Moore, Carrie Moore, Paul Eubank, Cody Eubank, Travis Stover, Justin Stover and Joshua Stover; great-grandchildren, Hayley Stone, Ethan Denny and Rachel Stover; niece, Cindy; sister-in-law, Virginia (Roger) Dickerson; brothers-in-law, Stanley (Nina) Alls and Kenneth (Hazel) Alls; and friends of the family, Sarah Wood, and Raymond and Pat Stanley. It was God's blessing when this wonderful man came into our lives 29 years ago. Now we have to let him go to be with his family in Heaven. We will miss him and always love him and never forget him. The family wishes to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for their help, especially, Jayne Blakely and Teresa Whitmen, Dr. Fintel, Dr. Kessler, and Dr. Lucian Grove. Jim loved his children and grandchildren as if they were his own and they loved him as if he were their father and grandfather. He brought love and great memories to our lives and we feel like we touched his life the same way. Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, June 5, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 9 East Church Ave., Roanoke, Va. 24011.
