Jean Daane Obituary

Jean Aurelia Plunkett Daane was born September 8, 1921 in Roanoke, Virginia to Mary Blanche Martin Plunkett and Theodore LaDrue Plunkett. She was educated in Roanoke and Lynchburg schools, and was graduated from Lynchburg College in 1942 with a degree in Sociology. She worked as a social worker for the state of Virginia and the Hartford Mental Health Clinic. She was married to Adrian Hill Daane in 1944, and moved to Ames, Iowa where her husband was employed with the Manhattan Project at Iowa State University. Jean learned to fly in the V-12 Program. She served as the Executive Director of the Story County (Iowa) American Red Cross, where her work included helping English War Brides settle in rural Iowa. Later work included establishing a Mental Health Clinic in Manhattan, Kansas; and serving as volunteer caseworker for Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Rolla, Mo. Jean Daane was a founding member of the Newnan/Coweta County Habitat For Humanity in 1993, and served as the President of the Board for three terms until her retirement. She was honored for her long and devoted service to Habitat For Humanity when the 22nd home, built by an all-woman volunteer crew, was dedicated in her name in a ceremony 2005. Jean was named Coweta County United Way Volunteer of the Year in 2000. She is survived by her husband, Adrian H. Daane and children, Susan Daane (Atlanta), Peter and wife Kari Daane (Newnan), and Ann Daane (Newnan); grandchildren, Will, Alice, and Sarah Daane, Mary Webb; and Jean and Elizabeth Pembleton; sister, Mary Alys Plunkett Ruther; and extended family. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.mckoon.com. In lieu of flowers or a service the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Daane's honor to the Newnan/Coweta County Habitat For Humanity www.nchfh.org.

Peter-
My deepest condolences to you, one of my longest friends, and your family. I loved reading about your mom and what a special woman and tireless contributor she was. I can see where you got your moral compass and leadership skills! Please extend my regrets to Kari, Will, Alice & Sarah. Find comfort in the celebration of a full life. I will come down and see you all soon.

Jean:
Thank you so much for all you were and did. It was such a privilege to know you and have you as a friend. Like so many others, I will remember your wonderful positive nature, your acceptance of other people, your exceptional ability to offer praise when it was warranted and matter-of-fact constructive criticism when you saw something you thought was wrong. Your life-long devotion to helping others has and always will be an inspiration to me. Thank you most of all for all your love. The world is not as good a place without you but so much better for all you gave us.
