Kaye N. Henderson, born July 4, 1955, passed away February 26, 2012. Every word on this obituary was composed by Kaye herself over a year's time, until February of 2012.
She is predeceased by her father and stepmother, James "Paul" and Wanda Neese Sr.; stepfather, William P. "Billy" Talbott; brother, James Paul "Jim" Neese Jr.; nephew, Stephen Jay Eisenberg; special uncle, Alvin "Bud" Anderson; father-in-law, Cecil L. Henderson; paternal grandparents, Walter V. and Mary Katherine Neese Sr.; and maternal grandparents, Vernon D. and Arcie M. Bolding.
Survivors include her loving husband of 36 years, who walked the journey with Kaye in faith, courage, love and strength, Barry L. Henderson, of Roanoke. Kaye loved Barry with all her heart and soul, and he was her true soul-mate and very best friend. She is also survived by the absolute lights of her life in her children, who gave her so much pleasure and pride, daughter and son-in-law, Brooke and Kevin Zirk, of Broadway; daughter and son-in-law, Blaire and Will Price, of Las Cruces, N.M.; and son, Barrett L. Henderson, of Harrisonburg. Her children were also her best friends. Another special survivor is her mother, with whom Kaye had a most special relationship, Helen B. Talbott, of Glasgow. She knew that no matter when she would call on her mom, she would be there in a heartbeat. Kaye never felt like she could thank her mom enough, so she wanted to make sure to do it one more time. Thanks, Mom.
Other survivors are her two brothers and their families: Gregory and Rickie Neese and their son, Dylan Neese, of Roanoke; Vernon Neese and his two daughters, Amanda Neese and Alicia Neese, all of Roanoke. Kaye is also survived by two very, very special aunts who loved her well all her life, Juanita Anderson, of Roanoke, and Ruby Thorpe, of Franklin, Tenn. Also surviving are a special uncle and aunt, JT and Charlotte Ann Bolding, of Bloxom. Kaye also is survived by a step-sister, Elizabeth "Betsy" Talbott, of Roanoke; stepbrother and sister-in-law and their family, William "Bill" and Jeannine Talbott and their children, Parks Talbott and Mary Catherine Talbott, of Arcadia. Also surviving from Roanoke is her mother-in-law, Velma D. Henderson; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James "Jim" and Lisa H. Mason, along with their two sons, Derek Mason and Carter Mason. Kaye has an extremely special and close cousin with whom she has shared her life, Robin Bailey, of Roanoke. Robin could always bring laughter in to any circumstance. Also left behind to cherish her memory are several aunts, uncles, and cousins too numerous to mention. And we can't forget to mention that her constant companion was their lab, Roxie, who was devoted to staying by her side no matter what.
When it comes to friends, Kaye had so many special and true friends that there is no way to name everyone without inadvertently leaving someone out. So, to all the friends who loved Kaye so well during her seven plus years of battling this terrible disease, she wanted each and every one of you to know how much she loved you and appreciated you all for everything you have done, food, cards, calls, movies, talks, visits, prayers. They all meant the world to her.
These friends were from all walks of life and many different groups. So to her friends in the "Monday Night Bible Study" at First Presbyterian Church, the ladies who attended the "Smith Mountain Lake Bible Study" in the summer months, her notorious and larger-than-life ladies from her "Bunco Group," the group of "high school luncheon gals," the "birthday dinner gals" from church, a most sincere word of thanks, and lots of love from Kaye to each and every one of you. And the same words go out to her Sunday school class "Koinania" at First Presbyterian Church, as well as the entire congregation and especially the Diaconate for their constant concern.
She also wanted to mention Dr. John Sloop, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg, where they were members for five years.
There, Kaye worked in the soup kitchen once a month and was active in their Sunday school class. She was asked to share a couple of times at First Presbyterian church in Harrisonburg about her journey and her faith which she did enthusiastically.
Kaye was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke. She was an elder where she served on the Session. She also taught Sunday School for many, many years. She served on the Christian Education Committee and worked for several years in the Mother's Morning Out Program there at First Presbyterian.
Kaye volunteered in many positions for many years at the schools where her children attended, but the greatest thrill of her life was spending time with Barry and the children. They truly loved her, and she loved them as they would always find a way to "rock her world".
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Smith and Dr. John Sloop officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Kaye and in honor of Gerard Blobe, M.D., Ph.D. to Duke University Medical Center for colorectal cancer research.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. For online condolences please visit www.oakeys.com.
