Lewis Peters Obituary

Lewis Calvin Peters, 81, of Roanoke, Va., left this life and entered into his eternal life in Heaven on Monday, April 26, 2010. He joins his beloved, dear wife of 57 years, Joyce Parrish Peters, who preceded him in death four years ago. He is survived and will be missed greatly by his two daughters, Ann Peters Dyer and Sharon Peters Schmitt. He leaves behind son-in-law and friend, Steve Schmitt; and four cherished grandsons, Arthur Dyer, Travis, Josh, and Cory Schmitt.
Lewis was born to the late Charlie Dennis and Irene Giles Peters and was predeceased by brothers, Robert (Bud) Peters, Chester Peters and Donald Peters. Surviving siblings are sisters, Frances Witt and Patricia Eanes, of Roanoke; brothers, Lawrence Peters and wife, Lois, of Wake Forest, N.C., and Alvin Peters and wife, Bobbi, of Wirtz, Va.; and many nieces and nephews whom Uncle Lew loved.

Lewis attended William Fleming High School. He worked in the East End Shops of Norfolk and Western Railroad for 20 years and subsequently resigned as a machinist to pursue a successful business as a building contractor here in the Roanoke Valley forming his own company, L.C. Peters Construction. He was a Lifetime member and Spike of the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association.

Lewis will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and paw-paw. His loyalty and devotion to his family and friends will be treasured, and the courage and persistence in fighting his recent cancer illness will long be admired. Special thanks to Dr. William Fintel, Liz Skaggs, and the entire staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Care, in addition to Good Samaritan Hospice (Amanda Bruneau) and Home Instead Senior Care (Robert McClary).

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Peters Creek Church of the Brethren where he was a long time member, or to Good Samaritan Hospice. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Peters Creek Church of the Brethren with Pastor Jack Lowe and the Rev. Paris E. Bain officiating. The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. The interment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.
