Margaret Shaffer Obituary

Margaret (Peggy) Philpott Shaffer, 78, of Roanoke, quietly passed away Saturday, June 5, 2010. Born in Bristol, Tenn., on March 31, 1932, she was preceded in death by her mother, Sallie Myrtle Philpott. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert Cecil Shaffer; and her daughter, Sharon Marie Shaffer. She retired from Verizon after 37 years of service and was a Lifetime Pioneer. After retirement, Peggy enjoyed volunteering for the Easter Seal Society of Virginia and The Salvation Army. She was an avid race fan, starting with Bob's career when they met. While he was recovering from an accident, she even strapped on a helmet and gloves to set a quarter mile record at the old Burlington Drag Strip. They loved to attend races and watch every week rooting (sic) for their favorite drivers. Despite numerous health issues in the last few years, she never lost her sense of humor, always ready to joke about the latest health crisis and take the strain off of her loved ones. Peggy loved animals and was always adopting strays and orphans. As a result, she leaves Mango, Bridget and Squeeker to take care of her family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Roanoke Valley SPCA, The Salvation Army or their charity of choice. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park with Pastor Mike Steryous officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.

I worked with Peggy on Airport Rd but had to retire early so haven't seen her since about 1991. I have such good memories of her - mostly her sense of humor when we were working OT and dragging or when we went to Richmond together on a training session just one week after I was married. I was sad but she wouldn't let me stay that way. My prayers are with the family. She was a jewel.
