Michael Shank

It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Michael Shank, of Roanoke, Va., on Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Mike was retired from the Roanoke County Sheriff's Department. Mike passed away suddenly in his Roanoke home following a long history of cardiac problems. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Fredricka Shank; and a brother, Billy Shank. He is survived by his lovely wife, Vaughna, with whom he loved to travel since his retirement from the Sheriff's Department. Mike and Vaughna are members of Journey Church. Mike is the father of two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa Annette Morris and Rick Wilson, of Roanoke, and Cherie E. and Billy Rinn, of Roanoke. He was the grandfather of five wonderful grandchildren, Mallory, Sarah, Jaxon, William and Ayden; two very special aunts, Jean Hammersley and Helen Shank, who cared for him after the death of his mother; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Bill Lantz, of Bedford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Sharon Shank, of Fort Mill, S.C., and Steven and Candy Shank ,of Texas; and a number of nieces and nephews. Always ready with sound advice and a willingness to mentor; his valuable guidance and loving support will be missed by his family and others. Many will remember Mike's sense of humor, quick wit and his ever willing readiness to play a practical joke when the opportunity arose. A celebration of Michael's life will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2010, at Oakey's North Chapel with Pastor Michael Duval officiating. Interment will follow in St. Andrew's Diocesan Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday at Oakey's North Chapel. 540-362-1237.
