Nannie Vassar Obituary

Nannie Maude Foster (Nancy) Vassar, 86, of Tazewell, Va., died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born March 14, 1924, at Rocky Mount, Va., she was the second daughter of the late John Randolph Foster and Nannie Law Foster. She graduated from Rocky Mount High School, Class of 1942, and after graduation worked at the Radford Arsenal during World War II. Later, when her children were well underway in school, she worked at the Tazewell County Public Library until her retirement. Mrs. Vassar was a member of the Tazewell Baptist Church in Tazewell, Va. and a member of the North Tazewell Lioness Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Moorefield Vassar; three brothers, Clifford Foster, Harry Foster and William Foster; one sister, Frances Vaden. Survivors include three daughters, Cynthia Matthews and husband, Scott, of Raleigh, N.C., Mary Jones and husband, Richard "Dickie", of North Tazewell, Va., and Anna Beavers and husband, Mark, of Bluefield, W.Va.; two sons, John Randolph Vassar and wife, Norma, of Roanoke, Va., and Charles Edward Vassar and wife, Denise, of Newport News, Va.; eight grandchildren; 24 greatgrandchildren; one sister, Wilda Foster Stone, of Rocky Mount, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, at Tazewell Baptist Church in Tazewell, Va. with the Rev. Robert Belcher officiating. Entombment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Deacons and members of Tazewell Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2010. The family requests memorial contributions be directed to the Tazewell Baptist Church, P.O. Box 592, Tazewell, Va. 24651 or the National Alzheimer's Association, 919 N.
