Rebecca Underwood Obituary

Rebecca Frances Canode (Mee Maw) Underwood, 72, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Craig County, Va., passed away on Tuesday April 13, 2010. The gates of Heaven will be flying open to welcome one of its angels home as Rebecca Frances Canode Underwood triumphs over her 2½ year battle against cancer and is received into the arms of Jesus and her beloved husband, Kermit. Also there to welcome her are her parents, Mattie Louise Osborn and Frank Marshall Canode; brother, Richard; sisters Annie, Opal and Maxine; and brothers-in-law, Claude and Charlie Underwood. It is hard to put into words the impact she has had on family, friends and loved ones during her life. She managed to carry herself with grace and dignity regardless of circumstances while relying on God and putting her family first. A true steel magnolia, whose memory will be cherished as her loss is so deeply felt. No one can ever take her place in our hearts. The loving care she has shown her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren will be remembered forever. We were truly blessed to have had her in our lives and we look forward to seeing her again in Heaven. Left to cherish her memory are children, Brenda Hunley (Gary), Veronica Underwood (Robert), Donna Hill (John Williams), Greg Hill (Cheryl), Roger Underwood (Melissa), and Cindy Underwood (Todd); 12 grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; four stepchildren, Darrell, Karen, Barbie and Robert; dear friend, Rosemary Copley; and other family and friends including the many children that mother welcomed into her heart and home throughout her life and that became "MeeMaw babies." The family suggests memorials be made to The American Cancer Society or RAM House in Roanoke. Funeral services will be private. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 540-982-2100.

Dear Veronica,
Judy called me last night to tell me your Mom had gone to Heaven. I somehow missed seeing the newspaper writeup, which was so inspirational, now that I found it online. I loved getting to know your Mom at your Salon. Yes, she was such an incredible person. I loved her dearly, along with all the others who have the honor of knowing her. May the Lord comfort you with His immeasurable grace and bring to mind all the best memories.
love,
Lynn Davis

You were so much more than my Mother to me. My friend and confidant. You shared the times of my life with me. Be it happy, funny, or sad I could always count on you to be there in it with me. My life will be forever changed without you here on earth and I look forward to our heavenly times together. We will have a lot to share with each other by then. No one will ever take your place in my heart. Forever in love, your daughter Brenda

To all the Hill and Underwood Kids,

I am so sorry for your loss. Franny was a very special person and I know that God was waiting for her at the gates of heaven to welcome her and give her the wings she so deserved, because I know she is an angel now watching over all!!

I will always remember those Thanksgivings we spent in Bluefield. We would sometimes cry about things but mostly I remember sitting in the kitchen just talking and laughing. She taught me how to make her famous pumpkin rolls and ever year I think of her when I am making them. Aunt Franny's pumpkin rolls are famous all over Michigan.

I will never forget her sweet laugh!!

Something I read once that reminds me of Franny!!

So I am glad not that my loved one has gone,
But that the earth she laughed and lived on
was my earth too!!
That I had known and lover her,
And that my love I'd shown.
Tears over her departure?
Nay, a smile
That I had walked with her a little while!!

Love, Annie
