Robert Young Obituary

Sunrise: June 8, 1924 Sunset: April 25, 2010 "We are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord."
(Corinthians II 5:8)
Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Robert Thomas Young, of Rocky Mount, Va., entered eternal life peacefully, surrounded by his family, at God's appointed time on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at Franklin Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was the second eldest of 13 children born on June 8, 1924, in Franklin County, Va., to the late Dora (Gilbert) and Samuel Davy Young Sr. Robert was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Morgan; three sisters, Nadine, Alice, and Mary Nelson; and four brothers, Samuel Davy, Herman, Hobert and Lincoln.
Robert attended Brown Elementary and Franklin County Training Schools and spent his childhood on the family farm learning the trade. He was drafted in 1943 to the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge in 1946, proudly serving his country for three years.

Shortly afterwards, Robert returned to his family's home place to master the family business of farming (tobacco, cattle, and lumber). In 1948, he married Susie Jane McEnheimer and was blessed with 61 years of marriage and five children and retired as a successful farmer.
His longest devotion has been to his faith, accepting Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior at a very early age. He was baptized at Holy Trinity Baptist Church, ordained a deacon and elected to the Trustee Board in 1961. He served as a treasurer of the Sunday school and chairman of the deacon board for many years.
Robert served six years on the Parks and Recreation Commission. In 1984, he was appointed advisor to the Franklin County Farm Service Agency for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He was elected to the Farmer's Home Administration Board in 1986. He was honored for participating in the Virginia Farm Management Tour.

After attending the Regional Conference on Title VI for the Civil Rights Act, Robert was inspired to become a community activist for outlawing segregation and advocating equal opportunity for all. He was an avid supporter of the Democratic Party, Pigg River Association, YMCA, United Way, Salvation Army, and American Legion Post #111.
Robert is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Susie Jane McEnheimer; five children, Wayne Thomas, Cecil Blake, Susan Jan, Olinda Fay and Bernard Boyd; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five siblings, Lillie (A.J.) Reeves, Ruth Young, Fred (Dorreth) Young, Perry Young, and Gilbert (Arlene) Young.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude for all expressions of love and sympathy during our bereavement. Our sincere appreciation continues to go out to all special angels that helped us get through the past year with many acts of kindness.
The funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Pigg River Community Center, Rocky Mount, Va. Arrangements by Stanfield Mortuary Service, 540-483-2902.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Carilion Clinic Hospice Services, 180 Floyd Ave., Rocky Mount, Va. 24151, 540-483-7024; Franklin County Rescue Squads, 1255 Franklin St., Rocky Mount, Va. 24151, 540-483-3030; or to Blue Ridge Cancer Care, 2013 South Jefferson St., Roanoke, Va. 24014, 540-982-0237.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
