Ruth Porter Williams Wells Chaves, 84, of Roanoke passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. She was a long term employee of the Veterans Hospital, where she was an officer in the union and fought for women's rights in the VA hospital system. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Salem and later with Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Roanoke. Ruth and husband Leonard were active wrestling parents through their son's wrestling careers at Andrew Lewis High School. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard Wells Jr.; two sons, David Martin Wells and Thomas Edward Wells; and her second husband, Raymond Chaves.

Ruth is survived by her son, James Allen Wells and his wife, Nancy, and their children, Alexis Wells Carpenter and Brenton Thomson Wells; her daughter-in-law, Charlotte Wells and her children, Clinton Clark Wells and Stephanie Wells Conteh; her daughter-in-law, Linda Wells and her children, Courtney Chastang, Whitney St Clair and Lindsey Meyer; and several great-grandchildren.
The family would also like to thank Richfield Retirement Community for the wonderful care she received.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, September 23, 2013, at Woodlawn United Methodist Church with Dr. Louis M. Strickler officiating. Inurnment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 2922 Corbieshaw Road, S.W. Roanoke, VA 24015.
