Vernon Michael Jennings, 64, of Martinsville, died on Monday, September 16, 2013, at his home. He was born on July 28, 1949, in Roanoke to the late Murrell Massey Jennings and Vernon Victor Jennings. He graduated from Virginia Western Community College and continued his education until he received a Bachelor's degree from Catholic Distance University. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where he was vice chair of the Parish Council and in the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Martinsville Republican Committee and volunteered with the Pregnancy Care Center of Martinsville and Henry County. He retired as a master mechanic with Branch Highways and also served in the Army National Guard.

Mr. Jennings is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Barnes Jennings of the home; sons, Gregory Jennings and wife, Siobhan Jennings, of Alexandria and Ryan Jennings of Seward, Alaska; granddaughters, Aibha Jennings and Aisling Jennings of Alexandria; sister, Rebecca J. Mowles, of Roanoke; brothers, Ronald Jennings and wife, Lephia Jennings, of Boones Mill, Marvin Jennings of Capron, and Raymond Jennings, of Appomattox; stepmother, Clara Jennings, of Virginia Beach; stepbrother, Nick Smith and wife, Marla Smith, of Virginia Beach; seven nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 12:10 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Mark White officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville.
Visitation will be Wednesday night, September 18, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel, and other times at the home.
