Walter Dungan Obituary

Walter Patton (Pat) Dungan, 85, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010. He was born on September 19, 1924, in Elizabethton, Tenn., a son of the late Walter Preston Dungan, and Josephine McCracken Dungan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marsha Hale Dungan; and a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Alice Brugh and Ken Brugh. Pat retired from General Electric Company after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Williamson Road Kwanis Club from 1971 until 1982, and served as President from 1974 to 1975. Pat served as a member of the Board of Directors of Literacy Volunteers of the Roanoke Valley, he served in the United States Navy during World War II, and attended Duke University, Class of 1950. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Elizabeth Garrett Riley Dungan; his children, the Rev. William "Bill" Coleman and wife, Nancy, of St. Thomas, Ontario, Mary Bess Riley Jordan, of Roanoke, Van Riley, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Charlotte Riley Carlson, of Foster City, Calif.; grandchildren, Beth DeShazo Wray, Roxanne Riley, Rachel Riley, Stefanie Diaz (John), Kimberly Gordon (Allan), and Bill Coleman (Rebecca); greatgrandchildren, Alex Diaz, Cole and Haley Gordon, Megan and Mary Wray; and nephews, Patrick Brugh (Mollie) and Robert Brugh. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Literacy Volunteers of the Roanoke Valley, Walter P. Dungan Literacy Fund Foundation, 706 S. Jefferson Street, Roanoke, Va. 24016. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Avenue, SW. There will be no viewing or visitation.
