Mr. Edward Crawley Williams Jr., 95, formerly of Covington, Va., died on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at The Glebe, Daleville. Mr. Williams was born December 7, 1913, in Lynchburg, the son of the late Edward Crawley Williams Sr. and Alma Watts Williams. He attended VPI at the age of 16. After he graduated, Crawley was hired by Westvaco Corporation in 1934 as a chemical engineer in Covington. He rose through the ranks, becoming plant superintendent, mill manager and division manager. Crawley was appointed to the board of directors in New York City where he served for 22 years before retiring at age 62. He was a man of great integrity who loved the Covington area. Crawley was an avid fisherman and hunter and while he had traveled widely he always considered his fishing camp on Dunlap Creek his favorite place in the world. Crawley married Alice Irene Smith of Covington in 1945. He is survived by their four children, Edward Crawley Williams III, Susan Williams Brooks, Allie Williams Mauney and John Gatewood Williams; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Crawley married Janet Burrowes in 1989. He is survived by Janet's two daughters, Susan Burrowes Bailey and Janie Burrowes Spencer; and two grandchildren. His last two years, Crawley had a loving and constant companion, Ginny Habblett. A memorial service will be conducted 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with William T. "Bill" Wilson speaking.
