A much-loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son and brother, Harold Lewis King, 89, passed away peacefully at 1 a.m., Sunday, January 27, 2013, in Troutville, with family present. He was born April 15, 1923, in Tillery, North Carolina. He joined the US Navy in 1942-1946 and received several awards and medals for the service he gave in World War II. He was Ships Cook First Class and shipped out to the Philippians on the U.S.S. Wharton on January 7th, 1945. He was the 27th troop on board. He worked two years as a hospital aid at the Virginia Veteran's Hospital and then in 1948, Harold began working for the US Postal Service and worked for five different Post Masters until his retirement in spring of 1983. Harold met and married Velda Nannie Vaughan in 1952 and had three children who they lovingly named Joan, Jerry and Judy (their 3 J's) and lived in Troutville. Harold loved fishing at the Outerbanks of North Carolina where he and his wife honeymooned and where his family spent many years vacationing. Harold was a true farmer at heart and leading up to his death kept a beautiful garden that he worked daily. In early years he also raised honeybees, sharpened saws and made fishing sinkers. During his retirement he enjoyed many years working as the Crossroads Mall Santa Clause and Easter Bunny. He was special in that he learned sign language so he could sign to the deaf children visiting. His sense of humor was contagious and his love for history and his continued desire for learning new things were truly inspiring. Harold never met a stranger and made many friends over the years.
