William S. (Sam) Gay Jr., 76, passed away on March 1, 2013 at the Bailey Hospice Center in St. Augustine, Fla. Sam was born in Roanoke, Va., graduated from Staunton Military Academy and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he studied Electrical Engineering and was on the Rifle Team. Sam worked for General Electric for 36 years in various positions in Salem, Va., Jacksonville, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C. He was a member of the Jacksonville Rotary Club and a volunteer for 26 years at The Players Club. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Marsh Creek Country Club. Sam retired to St. Augustine in 1994. He was a dedicated member of Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as a trustee, a docent, and on various committees. Through his love of photography, he documented with photographs the historical architecture of the church.

Sam is survived by his wife of fifty-five and a half years, Shirley; his three children, Mary Grace Abernathy (Tony), William Theron Gay (Kelli), and Robert Samuel Jenkins Gay; a sister, Cynthia Gay Reardon (Lowell); a sister-in-law, Joyce Gentry; one nephew and four nieces; four stepgrandchildren; and his buddy, Tiggy.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 36 Sevilla Street, St. Augustine, Fla. The family requests no flowers. Memorials in Sam's name can be made to Memorial Church Preservation Society, the Salvation Army, or S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals From Euthanasia). Arrangements by Craig Funeral Home, 904-824-1672.
