ROWLAND — Elaine Smith Burns, 88, of Rowland, recently of Atlanta, Ga., died on Feb. 7, 2014.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Rowland United Methodist Church, the Revs. Butch Farrah and Jack Ward Page. Burial will follow in Regan Cemetery in Dillon, S.C.
Born March 2, 1925, in Rockingham to the late William L. and Lucy Wilkes Smith, Elaine was raised in the Bowmore section of Hoke County near Raeford.
After attending Louisburg College, Elaine married Hal D. "Pete" Burns and the couple raised three children, Hal (Carolyn), John, & Lucy Burns Cusick (Wayne). A resident of Rowland for more than 60 years, Elaine had only recently relocated to Atlanta to be closer to her daughter.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, brother Eugene P. Smith, and sister, Allyne "Rusty" Townsend and is survived by her children; her grandchildren, Andrew Burns (Becky), Leslie Burns Ginski (Joe), Josh Cusick and Jessica Cusick; and great-granddaughter, Lucy Ginski. She was also blessed with many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Elaine, known as "E", was known for caring (and worrying about) family, friends, church, and her N.C. State Wolfpack!
In lieu of flowers, Elaine requested that contributions be made to FOCUS (3825 Presidential Pkway, Ste 103, Atlanta, Ga. 30340), Reagan Cemetery (370 Arnette Road, Dillon, S.C., 29536), Centenary Memorial Church (12200 Idlewood Drive, Laurinburg, N.C, 28352), or Rowland United Methodist Church (Church Street, Rowland, N.C., 28383).
The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Boles Funeral Home in Rowland.
