Dan M. Henshaw, M.D.

KINSTON — Dr. Dan Maxson Henshaw, retired Colonel, USAF, passed away July 7, 2014, after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Henshaw was born in Lansing, Michigan, and grew up in the greater Washington, D.C. area. He attended Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, where he was a member of the track and golf teams. These two sports were lifelong interests, and he was a gold medalist for the 440 meters in area Senior Games. Dr. Henshaw graduated from Michigan State University with honors in Zoology, earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School, and completed a rotating internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. His dermatology residency was at Walter Reed Military Medical Center.

Dr. Henshaw was a member of the Fifty-Year Club of both the North Carolina Medical Society and the American Academy of Dermatology. He was a practicing physician for fifty-seven years, the last nineteen of which were in Kinston, North Carolina, as president of Kinston Dermatology. In addition to patient care, his medical activities including serving as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Michigan State, Emory, and the University of California medical schools. While serving in the USAF, he taught medical students, interns, and residents; and was twice voted "teacher of the year" by the students. He was known for his dedication to patients and his passion for medicine.

While on active military duty, Dr. Henshaw served with the 106th General Hospital during the Vietnam War and with the 317th Contingency Hospital during Operation Desert Storm. He was dermatology consultant to various Surgeons General and overseas commands, served as Chief of Medicine at March AFB, and as NATO Exercises Hospital Commander. He was Chief of Dermatology at Ft. Bragg, Davis-Monthan AFB, March AFB, Lakenheath AFB, and Andrews AFB. Among his medals are the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with Device, and the National Guard Eagle Award.

Dr. Henshaw was the only son of Dorothy M. and Fred W. Henshaw. He is survived by his wife of more than 51 years, Dr. Diana M. Henshaw; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott D. and Leshia M. Henshaw; his daughter, Donine S. Henshaw; his grandsons, Grayson D. and Blake A. Henshaw; a sister, Ann H. O'Donnell; his brothers-in-law, Richard H. Monroe and wife Anne and Paul H. Monroe and wife Frances; and number of beloved cousins.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the members of Kinston's medical community, especially Dr. Peter Watson, who provided such competent and compassionate care to Dr. Henshaw and to the staff of Kinston Dermatology for their support and care.

The visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Garner Funeral Home, Kinston, so that colleagues, patients and friends may speak with the family.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at Eastside Cemetery in Rockingham, North Carolina at a later date.
