Mattie L. Chavis
LUMBERTON — Mattie L. Chavis, 89, of Lumberton passed away on Nov. 27, 2013, at Woodhaven in Lumberton.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday at Revels Funeral Home Chapel Lumberton. Burial will follow in the Wilkins Family Cemetery in St. Pauls.
Born in Robeson County on Feb. 15, 1924, Chavis was a daughter of the late Lattie and Ora Hammonds of Lumberton. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Abner Chavis and Moses Chavis, a daughter, Virginia Simpson; three sons, Abner Chavis, Ronnie Chavis and Stevie Chavis; two sisters, Vera Bell and Ida McNeill; five brothers, James, Hoke, Boot, Earl and Ertle Hammonds.
Chavis is survived by her children: two sons, Michael Chavis of Los Angeles and Randy Chavis of Durham; four daughters, Linda Lois Brayboy of Virginia, Barbara Mendoza of California, Rita Chavis and Connie Canady both of Lumberton; three sisters, Elsie Hammonds of Georgia, Loretta Scroggins of Missour, and Barbara Bonds of Florida; a brother, Terry McNeill of Pembroke; 30 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at Revels Funeral Home Lumberton.
