Jessie Bell Chavis
LUMBERTON — Jessie Bell Chavis, 91, of 811 River Ridge Road, was born Feb. 20, 1922. She departed this life to be with Jesus on Jan. 7, 2014, at her home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverside Independent Baptist Church, the Revs. Jerry McNeill, Ivory Henderson Jr., Mitchell Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens.
Jessie Bell was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She will be truly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Willie and Maggie Locklear; her husband, Belton Chavis; a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Nicole Sampson; and 16 siblings.
Mrs. Jessie Bell worked with the Public Schools of Robeson County in the cafeteria at Deep Branch Elementary School for 19 years. She touched the lives and hearts of many students and teachers each and every day.
Mrs. Jessie was a very diligent member of Riverside Independent Baptist Church. She was one of the church's founders. For more than 33 years, Mrs. Jessie Bell touched the lives and mentored many converts. She will be truly missed.
Mrs. Jessie Bell leaves behind to cherish her children, Vashtie Sampson of Lumberton, Naomi Oxendine (Glenn) of Rowland, Ruth Fawley (Dave) of Rowland, Ernest Chavis (Marie) of Lumberton, JoAnn Chavis of Kernersville, Terry Chavis of the home, and Gary Chavis (Carolyn) of Lumberton; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; and a host of relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Independent Baptist Church, 3644 U.S. 74 West, Lumberton, N.C. Arrangements are by Revels Funeral Home of Lumberton.
