Joseph Preston Phillips

LUMBERTON — Joseph Preston Phillips, 84, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2014, at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at East Lumberton Church of God, Dr. Bruce Brumfield and the Rev. L.F. Hatchell officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Cemetery.

He was born in Robeson County on Dec. 21, 1929, to the late Hughie Sanford Phillips and the late Effie Downing Phillips. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and retired from security for Security Forces Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Juanita A. Phillips of the home; his sons, Joseph Preston Phillips II of Lumberton, and Steven Allen Phillips of Bladenboro; his daughters, Beth Lewis and husband Gary of Lumberton, and Bonita Phillips of St. Pauls; a sister, Cathy Suggs of Fayetteville; and four grandchildren, Alexander Lewis, Joseph Lewis, Seth Lewis, and Nicholas Phillips.

The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory Inc., 809 E. Fifth St. in Lumberton.
