Ronald Scott

LUMBERTON — Pastor Ronald Scott, 69, of 2483 W. Carthage Road, was born Jan. 29, 1944, to Mrs. Vera Locklear of Lumberton, and the late Roosevelt Scott of Maxton. He departed this mortal life Sept. 8, 2013, into his eternal home surrounded by his family.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Rock Church of God on West Carthage Road in Lumberton, Pastor Roy Lee Tucker Jr., Bishop David Hatcher, and Dr. Wayne Brewer officiating. Burial will follow in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens.

Pastor Ronald Scott was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, the late Eddie and Flora Cummings; two sisters; and two brothers.

Pastor Scott moved to Charlotte in 1961. He completed his dental technician studies in Charlotte and an apprenticeship in New York, N.Y. in 1962 and continued his work in the dental field for the following 10 years in the City of Charlotte. Pastor Scott married Alice Jacobs in 1967 and in 1969 upon the birth of their first child, they moved back to Robeson County. Pastor Scott established Scott's Dental Lab in 1970 and owned and operated his dental business for the following 20 years.

In 1969, Bishop Ronald Scott joined the Saddletree Church of God and served as a deacon under the leadership of the late Pastor Roy Lee Tucker Senior. In 1979, Pastor Scott received a mandate from the Lord to Pastor the Smithtown Church of God in Maxton from 1979-1982. In 1982, Pastor Scott was appointed by the Church of God General Office to Pastor the Hestertown Church of God. As the church grew bountifully and his vision was fulfilled, Hestertown Church of God was relocated to 2209 W. Carthage Road of Lumberton, and was renamed to the Rock Church of God. The beautiful edifice is comprised of 40,000 square feet and seats over 1,500.

Today, the Rock Church is a mission-minded, five-fold ministry that provides outreach services and benevolence programs throughout Robeson County and the surrounding region. One of Pastor Scott's favorite quotes was that the Rock Church would be a "Hospital for the Hurting." Pastor Scott pastored the Rock Church for over 30 years until his departure.

Pastor Ronald Scott cherished his wife, Alice Scott of 46 years, of the home; his two daughters, Alisia Scott Oxendine and husband Brion of Lumberton, and Rhonda Faye Tubbs and husband Jimmy of Hope Mills; two sons, Attorney at Law Ronald Scott Junior and wife Melissa of Pinehurst, and Israel Scott and wife Missell of Cleveland, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren, Alison Scott Tubbs, Lauran Kristina Scott, Jordan Blake Scott, Christian Scott, Jacob Tubbs, Brion Alston Oxendine, Caleb Tubbs, Amelia Grace Scott, Harper Sophia Parris. He is survived by three dear aunts, Lillian Cummings of Pembroke, Mary Locklear of Pembroke, and Dessie Scott of Lumberton; three paternal brothers and six sisters of the late Roosevelt Scott; two maternal sisters and six brothers of Vera Cummings Locklear; special cousins; and a host of relatives and friends.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Southeastern Home Health and Hospice and Dr. James McLeod for their special care and the kindness demonstrated throughout our loved one's illness.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Rock Church of God, 2209 W. Carthage Road in Lumberton.
