Welton "Hobo" Hunt
FAIRMONT — Mr. Welton "Hobo" Hunt, of Fairmont, was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Robeson County. He departed this life on April 5, 2014, at his home with family by his side, making his journey of 78 years.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Floyd Funeral Services Chapel, the Revs. Howard Jacobs, Ricky Burnett, Lacy Lambert and Gary Deese officiating. Burial will follow in Piney Grove Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred "Larce" Hunt and Lonnie Oxendine Hunt, his wife, Queenie Elizabeth Carter Hunt, his in-laws, Weldon Carter and Elvie "Sis" Hunt Carter, a nephew whom he raised, Johnny Oxendine, a son, Timmy Locklear, four brothers, Billy, Horace, Pete, Cleveland and Ralph "Rat" Hunt, three sisters, Maitland Hicks, Mary Collins, and Girlene Jacobs.
Born and raised in rural Robeson County, after the death of his father in 1957 he began to operate the family farm, he also ran a country store called Hobo's place for many years, he worked at Converse Shoe Co. for over 25 years before his retiring in 2000 and was also employed by Floyd Funeral Services.
He was an avid dog lover, and a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Melody O. Honeycutt and husband Jake, both of Charlotte, and Elizabeth Cornita "Cookie" Hunt of the home; four foster sons, Donald Bruce Hunt of Pembroke, Henry Rhodes of Lumberton, Junior "Skeet" Cummings and Joey Jacobs, both of Fairmont; a brother, S.J. Hunt of Fairmont; three sisters, Marilyn Hunt of Fairmont, Martha Hunt and Maggie Locklear, both of Lumberton; two grandsons, Jonas and Robert Blanton, both of Charlotte; nine great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Ricky Hunt and wife Lishia; a special niece, Vicky Strickland and family; a very special and devoted friend, Lou Helen Bell and her daughters, Robbie Sanderson and Denise Hamilton; her siblings, Doug (Kat) Locklear and Lois (Charles) Richardson; his adopted daughters, Michelle H. Sanderson, Shari Carter, Norma Deese, and Earnestine Page; and the Carter Family; other special friends, Kathie Oxendine, Penny Hammonds, Stan Freeman, Judy Pridgen; Jamison Floyd, Alan Parnell, Bertha Hunt, Jeanette Ramirez, Roy Hunt, Monty Bowen; his dogs, Mollie, BoBo and Tarzan; also and a great host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank Hilda Pate with Amedsys Hospice of Pembroke for the wonderful and compassionate care she provided to our loved one and family.
The visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Floyd Funeral Services in Fairmont.
