Vivian D. "Monk" Oxendine
LUMBERTON — Mrs. Vivian D. "Monk" Oxendine, 81, of 481 Pine Tree Road, departed this life on May 17, 2014, at home surrounded by loved ones.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, the Revs. Henry Oxendine and Steve Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the Oxendine family cemetery.
She was born on Oct. 16, 1932, to the late Thelma McNeill Locklear, and Gilbert Locklear. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend to many and loved by all those who knew her. She enjoyed shopping, gardening and visiting with family and friends. She was affectionately known as "Mama Monk."
Ms. Oxendine was preceded by her husband, Mr. Hughie Oxendine; a son, Mr. Michael A. Oxendine; a sister, Mrs. Marnice Hunt; and three brothers, Mr. Alton Locklear, Mr. Johnny Locklear and Mr. Jimmy Locklear.
She leaves behind her daughter, Ms. Norma Hunt of the home; a daughter-in-law, Ms. Judy Lynn Oxendine of Lumberton; two sons, Mr. Andrew Oxendine (Michelle) of Pembroke, and Mr. Stevie Oxendine (Demetress) of Lumberton; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Maynor of Lumberton, and Mrs. Carlan (Hosbi) Locklear of Lumberton; two brothers, Mr. Billy (Lena) Locklear of Lumberton, and Bobby (Gail) Locklear of Pembroke; a special friend and caregiver, Annie Bell Lambert; and a host of family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Tabernacle Baptist Church, N.C. 711 in Lumberton. Arrangements are by Revels Funeral Home Lumberton.
