LELAND — Judy Herring Merritt, of Leland, formerly of Lumberton, passed away July 1, 2014, after a long battle with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS).
The funeral will the held at 11a.m. Saturday at Andrews Market Street Chapel. Private interment services will be held following the service.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, James and Margie Herring; her father-in-law, Robert Merritt; and a son, Christopher Scott Grimes.
She leaves behind her husband of 30 years, James Robert "Bob" Merritt; her son, John Grimes Jr. and wife Diane of Leland; a daughter, Lisa Grimes Girard and husband James of Leland. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Christina Girard, Brandy (Matt) Bell, Avery (Laura) Gray, Daniel Williams, Catherine (Shawn) Rafferty, Meghan Girard and Michael Girard; a brother, James (Beverly) Herring; a sister, Sandra (David) Hart; a brother-in-law, Jody Merritt; a sister-in-law Treva Merritt, and a much beloved mother-in-law, Mildred Merritt, as well as seven great-grandchildren and a spoiled puppy and companion, Gidget.
Judy was the office manager at Neuwirth Motors in Wilmington before leaving at the age of 50 to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. Judy worked as a registered nurse at NHRMC for six years prior to retiring.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Andrews Market Street Chapel.
