The Rev. Joseph Burns
LUMBERTON — The Rev. Joseph Burns, 68, of 5151 U.S. 74, was born on July 21, 1946, and peacefully departed this life to be with Jesus on Aug. 4, 2014.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Eastside Baptist Church, Bro. Dale Jones, the Revs. Bobby Burns, Billy Burns and Jerel Brewer officiating. Burial will follow in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens.
Joseph was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
The Rev. Joseph was a faithful member and an evangelist of Eastside Baptist Church, where he loved and was loved. He worked with Graphic Packing for 25 years and retired and worked with retirement homes and loved the ministry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Avie L. Burns; four brothers, Ernest Burns, Rufus Burns Jr., the Rev. O.J. Burns and Grant Burns; and a sister, Maggie Oxendine.
The Rev. Burns is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 43 years, Ms. Sandra Burns; two daughters, Avie Suzette Lowery (Greg Lowery) and Cassandra Jo Chavis (Chad Chavis); a son, John Joseph Burns. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Master Joshua Chavis, Ms. Jordyn Lowery and Ms. Riley Chavis: five brothers, the Rev. Bobby Burns (Brenda), the Rev. Billy Burns (Sarah), Delton Burns (Lou Ellen), Stanford Burns (Shelia) and Grantford Oxendine (Cathy); three sisters, Betty Kilroy (Jake), Mary Cleveland (Pat) and Lillian McKenzie; and a host of relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Revels Funeral Home Lumberton.
