Irene Harrington

MARIETTA — Mrs. Irene Johnson Harrington, of Marietta, passed away peacefully on Aug. 28, 2014 just two days before her 98th birthday.

A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Olivet United Methodist Church in Marietta, her grandson, the Revs. Brian Harrington and Dalma Cribb officiating. A graveside service will be at Marietta Cemetery immediately following the service.

She was the loving and devoted wife of Welton Harrington who resides at the Harrington home place in the Marietta community. Irene was born Aug. 30, 1916, in Lake View, S.C., to the late Mack and Willow Johnson. She and Welton were married on Nov. 28, 1937. Last year they celebrated 76 years together.

Irene and Welton were the parents of four children. They include, Mary Harrington Wilkerson and husband John of Marietta, Marie Harrington Graham and husband Tony of Harrisonburg, Va., Archie Harrington and wife Dare Carson Harrington of Roanoke, Va., and Abner Harrington and wife Susan McCormick Harrington of Fairmont. Irene is survived by six grandchildren and their spouses, Sharon W. and Barry Leonard, Brent and Michele P. Harrington, Toby and Suzanne R. Graham, Dana G. and Eddie Mozingo, Scott Wilkerson, Brian and Ashley G. Harrington. Irene had 12 great-grandchildren who adored her.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Johnson and Cecil Johnson; and a sister, Kate Johnson Rich.

She was a member of Olivet United Methodist Church in Marietta for 76 years, where she participated in many community and church organizations. She also enjoyed many crafts and won awards for her quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting and cooking.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Floyd Funeral Services in Fairmont.
