Elijah Charlie Winstead, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Kindred Healthcare of Rocky Mount.

Elijah was born on December 15, 1927 to the late John and Bena Lamm Winstead. He served his country honorably during WW II and after returning to Nash County, he engaged in farming for a few years, before joining Orkin Pest Control where he rose to become a supervisor. He was most actively involved with the West Mount Fire Department, of which he was a member for 42 yrs and West Mount Ruritan Club, where he enjoyed cooking. He was predeceased by his Siblings: Oliver, John, Esther, W.D., Ruby, Susan, Naomi, and Theron Winstead.
He leaves to cherish his memory Ernestine Nelms Winstead, to whom he was married for 62 yrs, daughters; Helen Winstead and husband Phil Rackley, Izeta Winstead and husband Billy Stephens, all of Raleigh, granddaughter, Christy Poland Haggis and husband George of Rocky Mount and great-grandson, Eli Haggis, brothers; David, Donald and Charles Winstead, sisters; Pattie Greene and Geneva Walker and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday October 26, 2012 at 11AM in the chapel of Johnson Funerals and Cremations 661 English Road with the Rev. Mary Todd and Buck Pittman Officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday October 25, 2012 from 6-8PM at the funeral home.
