James "Jim" Roy Cockrell, Sr., 67, passed away Friday, October 04, 2013. He was born in Nash County, December 6, 1945 to the late Roy and Geneva Batts Cockrell.
Jim graduated with honors in 1964 from Coopers High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, where he served for ten years. Jim continued his education following the service by attending NC Wesleyan, where he graduated in 1979. He then attended East Carolina University, where he continued his graduate studies, and later studied at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Jim retired from the Nash Rocky Mount Public School System in 2007 and began teaching at Faith Christian School, where he remained until May of this year. During his time at Faith Christian School, he fell in love with the staff, students, and athletes which were so dear to his heart. He became ordained through Edgemont Baptist Church in July of 2012, and was named Pastor Emeritus in September 2013.
Jim is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy Cooper Cockrell; son, Jim Cockrell and wife, Julia; daughter, Abigail Cockrell Pridgen and husband, David; grandchildren, Victoria, Matthew and Rebecca Pridgen and Kayla Cockrell; brother, E.J. Faircloth and wife, Debbie; sisters, Hadessa Coley, Geraldine Minshew and husband, Hugh, Myrtle Tyson and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Rematha Weaver.
The family will receive friends Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Cornerstone Funeral Home from 6-8:00 p.m. Private Committal will follow after service.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Faith Christian School at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Keith Griffin, Dr. Edward Bunn and Rev. Carlton Cockrell officiating. Flowers are accepted or memorial donations may be made to Edgemont Baptist Church, 1622 West Mount Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27803 or to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
