She attended the Booker T. Washington High School in Rocky Mount and was a proud graduate of Livingston College in Salisbury, NC. Julia received her Masters Degree in Education with a concentration in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro.
Mrs. Anderson moved to Greensboro in 1965 when her beloved husband, the late Rev. Alexander Anderson, was appointed as the Pastor of St. Matthews United Methodist Church where she remained a faithful member. Being the wife of a Methodist minister in the 1950s and 1960s, Julia was afforded the opportunity to live and work in a number of different communities key in the Civil Rights struggle such as Brooklyn, Chicago, Little Rock and Nashville. Her longest tenure was served at Bennett College where she was employed as a Counselor and Teacher for 23 years.
Mrs. Anderson was a woman with a deep abiding faith in God. She believed in education and civil rights. She loved life and helping others. Above all the tributes to her memory, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Mary Kathryn Lee (Jeffrey) of Plainfield, New Jersey, Kimberly Anderson of Greensboro, four grandchildren, Joseph and Timothy Hemingway, and Roxanne and Nathaniel Lee, and many nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Rev. Alexander Anderson and her beloved son Alexander Anderson.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthews UMC for the Youth Education in memory of Mrs. Julia B. Anderson.
