NEWPORT - Ray Henderson Clayton, 89, of Newport, NC, died on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Raleigh.

Mr. Clayton was born in the Seagate community of Wilmington, NC on August 15, 1924, son of William Henry Clayton and Mary Susan Whitehurst Clayton. In addition to his parents, Mr. Clayton was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Iris Perry Clayton, and his four sisters and one brother.
He moved to Miami, Florida at age two and following graduation from Miami Jackson High School, enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. Following his military service, he was an accountant for Stacy Rowell Ford of Miami and Key West, Courtesy Ford of Miami, and The Town of Miami Lakes. He was an active member of the Allapattah United Methodist Church in Miami where he served in many leadership positions. Upon moving to North Carolina in 1977, he was employed at State Wholesale Supply in Rocky Mount until his retirement in 1994.
He and his wife built a home in the Castalia community of Nash County and were faithful members of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. His wife's health necessitated a move to Newport, NC to be closer to their daughter and family in 2007. There he was active at St. James United Methodist Church and a volunteer in their Thrift Shop.
He is survived by his daughter, The Reverend Susan Clayton Lindblade and husband, The Reverend Eric N. Lindblade, Jr. of Raleigh; grandson, Eric A. Lindblade and his wife Lindsey of Gettysburg, PA, and his beloved nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery, 350 North 1st Street, Nashville, NC., with The Reverend Eric N. Lindblade, Jr. officiating.
Mr. Clayton's family expresses profound appreciation to the Administration and Staff at Carteret House Assisted Living in Newport, Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation in Morehead City, and Kindred Transitional Care in Raleigh for their kind and attentive care to Mr. Clayton as well as to his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 250, Newport, NC 28570 and designated to the Community Life Center or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, c/o Erolyn Holden, 5330 Boulden Road, Nashville, NC 27856.
