'Herb'
Herbert "Herb" Greenberg, 65, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014. He was born in Brooklyn, NY September 15, 1948 to the late Benjamin and Sylvia Switznick Greenberg. In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by a brother,
David Greenberg. Herb moved with his family to Rocky Mount in 1958 when his father opened Rocky Mount Undergarment, Inc. Herb later served as Vice President of the company.
In 1996, Herb founded Action Community Television Broadcasting Network, Inc., and started WHIG-TV, a station focused on community programing for Rocky Mount and the Twin County Region. In addition to his corporate duties as CEO and President, Herb was ever-present through Rocky Mount as a program host, producer and cameraman.
In addition to his business pursuits, Herb was a lifelong volunteer and civic leader in the Rocky Mount community. He served as President of the Rocky Mount Jaycees and as a Board Member of the Twin County Hall of Fame and Jim Clack Foundation. Herb was also a member of Rocky Mount Business Builders and Wilson Business Builders.
Herb used WHIG-TV and his considerable relationships with local residents and businesses to raise funds for numerous organizations, including the American Red Cross, Christian Fellowship Home for Men, and others.
Last February, the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce honored Herb for his "behind the scenes" commitment to his fellow citizens with the 2012 Woody Brown Award. The award recognizes individuals for their long-term commitment to advancing the growth of the Chamber and Rocky Mount.
Herb was an active member of Temple Beth El in Rocky Mount.
From behind the camera and as a community volunteer, Herb sought and succeeded in bringing out the best in others. His leadership in business and civic life focused on the individual, and shining the spotlight on others while selflessly lending a helping hand without ever taking advantage of others.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gladys Leiva Greenberg of the home; brother, Murray Greenberg of Manhattan, NY; sister, Mary Beth Greenberg of Manhattan, NY; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Joe, Sandra, and Brittany Smith.
