TARBORO - Howard M. Evans, 81, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, August 8, at First Free Will Baptist Church of Tarboro with the Rev. Stanley Buck officiating. Burial will follow in Edgecombe Memorial Park.
Howard Evans was a lifelong farmer and entrepreneur. Born in Pitt County, he moved to Edgecombe County in the mid-1960's in order to diversify his farm operation. In addition to being a capable farmer, Evans quickly became known as a shrewd businessman and skilled negotiator, enjoying the give-and-take of buying and selling cars, trucks, and equipment. Eventually, all three sons joined him in running and expanding the family farm. While much of Evans' time was spent working, he also took time out for play, boating and water skiing at Lake Gaston with his family. He was an active member of the First Free Will Baptist Church, serving throughout the years as a Sunday School teacher, usher, deacon, and trustee, and especially enjoyed attending gospel singing events. Evans was a tough-minded optimist who believed that with faith in God and hard work, no obstacle was insurmountable.
He is survived by his sons and their families: Wayne and Guyla Evans and Rebekah Evans of Tarboro, Jamie Evans and Laura Brown Lancaster, Rachel Tannhauser and Grace Connor of Tarboro, Freddie Evans and Reesie Bradshaw of Speed;
Grandchildren, Jamie Heath Evans and Courtney Jones, Emily Evans, Logan Evans and Morgan Garris, Mara Leigh Evans, Christopher Evans and Alayna Schmidt, Dylan Evans; Great-grandchildren, Audrey and Waylon Evans
The family will receive friends and relatives at First Free Will Baptist Church of Tarboro on Thursday, August 7, from 6:00-8:00 pm and other times at 1600 Canterbury Rd., Tarboro.
