Dorothy "Tootsie" Farmer Flowers, 85, of Rocky Mount, NC, passed away of August 5, 2014. Dorothy was born in Wilson County on March 31, 1929 to the late Julius and Ida Jane Gardner Farmer . She was married to the late Curtis Flowers for 62 years. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Sheila Elaine and Donna Flowers Woodcock.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynne Lancaster and her husband Bruce of Rocky Mount; granddaughter Crystal Lancaster of Boise, Idaho; Grandson Brian Lancaster of Rocky Mount; her sister Cleo Bennett of Wilson and special niece, Marcelle Whitley of Stantonsburg and her special nephew, Rev. Dennis Harrell.
Dorothy was a farmer's wife who enjoyed cooking meals for the farm hands, sewing, playing the piano, growing and arranging flowers, and entertaining her family and friends. She was a member of Proctor's Chapel Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday August 8, 2014 at Proctor's Chapel Baptist Church on Old Wilson Rd. in Rocky Mount. The service to celebrate Dorothy's life will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. Walt Cooper and Rev. Dennis Harrell officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park in Wilson.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation for Dorothy's in-home caregivers, Alma, Carolina, and Jackie. They also wish to thank her Hospice staff, Kim, EJ, Melissa and Angela for care and support during the last months of her life, and finally, the family would also like to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the staff at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital, who showed overwhelming compassion not only for Mrs. Flowers, but also her family.
