Richard P. Rogers, Sr., 96, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 9, 2014. He was born on March 20, 1918 in Rocky Mount.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Zelma Hill Rogers, his son, Richard "Richie" Rogers, Jr.; his parents Philip Henry and Martha Susan Arnold Rogers; brothers, Norman, Edward and Vernon and his sisters Marion Denton, Mary Cooper, and Dot Brooks.
Richard was a loving father to his daughter Bunny and husband Charles Pickel of the home and to his grandson Richard Keith Rogers of Cornelius, NC; granddaughters Michelle Redinger (John) of Vienna, VA and Elizabeth Hodges of Gloucester, VA. He is also survived by his great grandchildren Ashley and Latham Redinger and Ridge Hodges; his sisters Ruth Arrington (Wallace) of Florence, SC, Margaret Williams (Billie) of Nashville, NC, Lillian "Boots" Davis of Wilson, NC and sister-in-law Evelyn Colbert of Rocky Mount and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard was an active member of Englewood Baptist Church serving in the past as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Sunday school teacher, lay minister and prayer warrior.
Richard was a veteran of World War 11 serving in the 558th Air Service Squadron Army Air Corp both in the U.S. and Italy.
For many years Richard operated a lumber mill with his father and later became an independent insurance salesman with policyholders throughtout Eastern NC.
Richard was well known for his gardening skills and his delicious butter beans and tomatoes which he shared with family and friends. He was a skilled woodworker and built numerous pieces of furniture for his family.
The family gives special thanks to Dr. Timothy Smith and Denise and Dr. Fronbose and Michell, Nancy Brinkley, Dorothy Jones, Patsy Ezzell and Keith Griffen of the hospice of Nash General.
Richard's visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 12 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home and Crematorium. His celebration of life service will be at 2:00 p.m. at Johnson's on Wednesday, August 13, preformed by Rev. Michael Cloer, Rev. Greg O'Neill and Robert Beaman.
